If you’re really pressed for time, simply buy Psunami from Digital Anarchy. Beyond that it’s not impossible to create water, but you are going to need several pre-comps just for the effect. You will have to create 2 or 3 instances of Fractal Noise mapped onto 3D layers which you tilt towards the horizon. The key point here is to have different sizes and levels of detail in the noise. Then you can combine those layers in your main comp using blend modes and treat them further. Using effects such as Find Edges, Roughen Edges, Texturize and a few others on duplicates of your pre-comps you can get things such as tiny foam ridges here and there as well as some glossy highlights. Play around with blendmodes such as Add, Multiply, Screen and Overlay. As an alternative you may also consider Taron’s ZBornToy. It’s more or less a matter of playing around until it looks “nice”.

Maybe some of the images you are using do not have a correct Alpha embedded, so C4D keeps turning it off. sorry, no other ideas. v7 is too far in the past for me and I can’t remeber if there are any specific bugs.

January 14, 2007 at 3:57 pm in reply to: Question Relating to After Effects 7 Presets

Should be no problem at all. Each preset wil ladd it’s own set of animators and assuming the keyframes stored in each preset occur at different times, they should not interfere. The only thing you may need to change are the mixing modes for the presets (add/intersect/subtract etc.) under the “Advanced” section of each animator.

Move all your lights to the main comp. Nop other way. Lights in pre-comps will be ignored with collapse transformations.

You need to adjust your keyframes’ Bezier interpolation. The phenomenon you are experiencing is overshooting from the keyframes. Keep in mind that temporal interpolation and spatial interpolation are separate – only changing one of them, will not affect the other. In your case you only need to affect the temporal interpolation. The easiest way to do so is to use the Easy Ease In/Out keyframe assistants.

January 13, 2007 at 4:34 pm in reply to: Help! Export as avi

If your video ended up to small, you chose a CoDec that does not support larger res or only rendered at quarter resolution or something. Anyway, I strongly advise you to consult your manual on render settings, output modules and how to use the render queue or check the sticky AE basics thread or creativeCalf. Everything you need is explained there.

[Roger BURTON] “but I find it a little hard to have to buy – in effect – TWO copies of Photoshop and Illustrator and Bridge… I think what I’m saying is … is it cost effective to buy CS and PS even though I will have dupes of Pshop and Illustrator and bridge or should I buy one or the other and stand alone copies of any extra software I need …”

Like jimmybee said, considering the value you get, it should be a no-brainer. I also think your existing software will entitle your to get a discount (at least AE is a valid candidate), taking off even more bucks/GBP/Euros or whatever. If all else fails, don’t forget that you are legally entitled to sell your software and transfer licenses, so at least you don’t have too many boxes floating around that are catching dust…

January 13, 2007 at 1:51 pm in reply to: Growing 3d Network?

[frepontaine] “Is there some sort of expression I could write that would cause the split?”

No. All layers have to exist physically anyways. You could try to control some parameters for the growth (see my worldmap tutorial), but beyond that you still have to place the splitpoints, define angles for the expanding lines and so on. As for the rest – your own ambitions are going to make this a pain. If you can pull it off, then hats off and everybody will admire you, but frankly you should perhaps settle for something simpler. It’s much more feasible to simply reveal the network or parts of it by using animated masks and wipes considering that you probably have a deadline not too far away. Even in 3D this would require some massive setup work. The simplest trick I can think of is using L-Systems like Maya’s paint effects or create particle based setups e.g. by combining the Tracer in Cinema 4D’s MoGraph module with a particle emitter. to draw the path.

January 13, 2007 at 1:44 pm in reply to: After Effects/Avid Codec questions.

The problem is the Avid CoDec. You can’t really do much about it. The sound problems can best be remedied by simply exporting your audio separately. For the video, use Quicktime references instead of creating Avid CoDec encoded clips. Beyond that I really can’t provide any advice.

  • Search the Trapcode forum for “soft smoke” or “cigarette smoke”, I’ve posted a few answers there in the past involving the Particular plugin. Also check Digital Anarchy’s website, they have a short tutorial involving their Hairlines plugin, perhaps you can draw some inspiration from it.
