After Effects/Avid Codec questions.
Good day all.
My issue is this:
Are there known errors causing crashes in After Effects 7 when using movies exported from Avid using the Avid CoDec?
I have encountered errors in After Effects when importing and using video — created in avid — that often disrupts the flow by either slowing down or crashing After Effects. Such errors state: “After Effects error: audio output problem. Undefined external error. (10::66)”, and “unspecified drawing error.” All of which occur after a ram preview or a render.
Since After Effects works well on other projects that with video not from my avid, could there be a known codec issue or is this just a flakey issue that can be resolved with a re-install of software. Also, I do not run Avid and AE at the same time.
one last thing, my specs:
HP workstation xw8200
intel Xeon 3.4GHz/3.4GHz
2 GB Ram
NVidia Quadro FX 1400AFter Effects 7

The problem is the Avid CoDec. You can’t really do much about it. The sound problems can best be remedied by simply exporting your audio separately. For the video, use Quicktime references instead of creating Avid CoDec encoded clips. Beyond that I really can’t provide any advice.

i use avid codec everyday (import clips exported from avid with “same as source” option) with audio, and export with the same codec (2:1 interlaced) : never had a problem with it, not more crashes than with another codec.
(except once : exported as progressive, and it caused a pc based avid to mismatch colors – solved using interlaced) -
First off, thank you both for the quick responses.
Secondly, a problem I forgot to include is that I have used quicktime references, and it fails to render at all. the render bar in the comp appears, but just sits there and never advances. I will attempt a reinstall of After Effects, but I am weary of that because other video from different sources works fine.

One more question.
Does Adobe provide support anywhere on their website for references about errors generated in After Effects? I have searched their site for this, but can find nothing of this sort. If not Adobe, anywhere else?

For anyone who may have this issue, I have a tentative resolution… tentative only because I have not thoroughly tested it, but so far everything appears to be working.
On Adobe’s website forums one solution I found was to disable disk caching through the secret preference option (Shift + selecting preferences). Use adaptive resolution and not OpenGL. And reduce disk image caching: max mem usage to about 110% and max ram cache to 50%.
And the most helpful piece found yet, is to download AE 7.0.1.
