  • [Gunner Jones] “My suggestion is to blow off dragging and dropping altogether and use F9 and F10 shortcuts instead. Waaaaay faster and more precise.

Draggin’ and droppin’s fer sissies anyway. ;-)”

Unless you’re working on complex sequences with tons of layers. Dragging and dropping can allow more control. Not everyone works on projects with simple cuts like documentaries and films…

  • In reading your post I’m a bit confused. First, if all of this stuff is so important to you, and Canopus is so perfect in your mind, then why are you looking to switch? Whatever your reason, I feel comfortable telling you that if you try to adapt a new tool to and old method of workflow you are virtually assured of disappointment.

Second, I’m wondering if you realize that rendering is often a good thing? Many rendered effects look better than anything done in realtime (regardless of price). DVD encoding is a good example.

Third, whoever thinks that DVD encoding is poor in Compressor, clearly does not know how to use it…

[Noah Kadner] “Yep- welcome to the wonderful world of electronics. There’s always faster, quicker and cheaper right around the corner. Question is, what will be ready for your shoot today?

Since the camera doesn’t arrive until November (assuming no changes), it would appear that we don’t need them today…

I just think for the record it should be said that many of us are having zero issues with FCP5. I have it on three different machines… all with no problems. It’s unfortunate that some people are experiencing problems, but I’m sure there are a great many people out there that are also enjoying FCP5 without issues.

  • [Tom Matthies] “But, so far, so good on my end. I bought a new computer this time around (retiring the trusty old 1Ghz DP) and everything had been installed fresh and squeaky clean. I am, however, about to begin to bring over projects from the old computer. We’ll see how this goes in the next few days. Other than a bad stick of RAM and MANY attempts to get a good replacement, the change over has gone without a hitch.

We have zero problems here on three machines. You were wise to start from scratch. I think Walter already reiterated that recommendation in another post, but whenever there is a new OS, I always start from scratch. It saves time in the end.

FWIW, we duplicated the same 4.5 project file three times and then converted each of them into FCP 5, using all three methods (normal, best, fastest). We even pasted the clips from the 4.5 sequence into a sequence originating in FCP 5. They all look the same, because in each case, we had it delete the render files when converting.

A lot of people are reporting diminished video quality and problems with graphics. Remember, Dynamic RT changed things. In our experiment we saw that quality loss occur until we rendered. In the past, we would have had to render first, since we had gamma and color correction filters on the clip, as well as a graphic overlay. With Dynamic RT it will play back with pixelated quality so you can continue trimming without having to stop and render. Once you render, it looks fine. This isn’t a bug, it’s a feature… which you can disable if you want to by switching to High instead of Dynamic. Then it works like the old FCP HD.

Pilot error will always occur with any technology. If anyone is having issues, I’d wipe the drive and start over from scratch. I installed FCP Studio directly without any old version of FCP even on the drive. Everything is clean and working perfectly (even with beta Io drivers).

I’m gathering that you converted a 4.5 project file? When you got the conversion dialog box, did you check the “erase rendered files” option? This seems to be almost required.

[Morten Ranmar] ” I cannot se the Graffiti titler after updating to FCP5 – it iss not on any of the CDs either?”

Graffitti is Boris standalone CG… it was never included with FCP. What you are refering to was the Caligraphy plugins. They now appear under a “Boris” menu in the Generator popup, and are automatically installed when installing FCP 5 (at least they were for us)…

Nice analysis Peter. It’s always good to see how other people process the info and compare it to how we see things… it would be good to here your thoughts on the 450, though this probably isn’t the right forum for it…

[NICK B] “At the London Production show one stand had the full range of Sony Camera’s looking at the same scene i felt the Z1 looked better than the new DV450 infact the Z1 looked better than digibeta !

Except all they ever show is the camera hooked to a monitor. Ask them to record things to tape and play it back for you. They won’t. I asked this at NAB. Why won’t they? Because HDV cameras look much better when hooked to a camera than they do when playing it back from tape.

BTW, did you pan and zoom? We were a bit put off by the artifiacting…
