June 10, 2005 at 6:39 amWhy in the world would you change software in the middle of a project? Didn’t your mother teach you anything?

June 10, 2005 at 12:12 pmDid you look at the manual and make sure that all of your settings are correct? There are some new user and RT parameters in FCP 5.0.

June 10, 2005 at 1:39 pmWe all “know” that upgrading FCP in the middle of a project is a “no no”. However, there are times it can’t easily be avoided. I have several, on-going clients that do spots each week for air. I usually use the same project for producing the new spots since it has all of the elements that I need. These are price/item type spots. I’ve been doing spots for one of my clients since version 1.25. I do, update the project and clean out outdated materials, but it’s difficult to avoid some overlap when upgrading software or computers. I’d imagine many TV stations that use FCP for daily promos would be in the same boat as well.
But, so far, so good on my end. I bought a new computer this time around (retiring the trusty old 1Ghz DP) and everything had been installed fresh and squeaky clean. I am, however, about to begin to bring over projects from the old computer. We’ll see how this goes in the next few days. Other than a bad stick of RAM and MANY attempts to get a good replacement, the change over has gone without a hitch.
Crossing my fingers now…

“We have zero problems here on three machines. You were wise to start from scratch. I think Walter already reiterated that recommendation in another post, but whenever there is a new OS, I always start from scratch. It saves time in the end.
FWIW, we duplicated the same 4.5 project file three times and then converted each of them into FCP 5, using all three methods (normal, best, fastest). We even pasted the clips from the 4.5 sequence into a sequence originating in FCP 5. They all look the same, because in each case, we had it delete the render files when converting.
A lot of people are reporting diminished video quality and problems with graphics. Remember, Dynamic RT changed things. In our experiment we saw that quality loss occur until we rendered. In the past, we would have had to render first, since we had gamma and color correction filters on the clip, as well as a graphic overlay. With Dynamic RT it will play back with pixelated quality so you can continue trimming without having to stop and render. Once you render, it looks fine. This isn’t a bug, it’s a feature… which you can disable if you want to by switching to High instead of Dynamic. Then it works like the old FCP HD.
Pilot error will always occur with any technology. If anyone is having issues, I’d wipe the drive and start over from scratch. I installed FCP Studio directly without any old version of FCP even on the drive. Everything is clean and working perfectly (even with beta Io drivers).

June 11, 2005 at 4:14 pmHi Shaun
not sure if this might be your problem, but you might want to check your field dominance is still correct after the upgrade …. if you’re seeing the chopiness in transitions and other renedred areas (like speed ups) that does sound like the field order has become reversed?
maybe worth a look
