June 4, 2005 at 11:53 pm in reply to: Thinking of Avid Xpress Pro and ditching Final Cut Pro.[Andrew J. Bricker] “I’ve been using Avid products for years, from the high to the low end. I find that Avid still holds the title, so to speak, when it comes to being the “Industry Standard.” That being said, it’s apparent that Final Cut is moving in fast. That’s why I installed Final Cut on one of my Macs. I played with it, and had a very hard time with it.”
Avid installed base was 1/3 of FCP’s. In television they are losing ground, and now that HD is coming to the forefront FCP will gain ground even further.
The problem Avid editors have is that they want to operate FCP like an Avid. That won’t work any more than operating a chain saw like a hand saw. Different tools need retraining… ask F-16 pilots.

“Well said. I was wondering when someone was going to bring up that. With the difference in price between doing FCP in HD and Avid in HD, I could pay off the balance of my mortgage…

[Morten Ranmar] “When burning data on DVD media with Tiger 10.4.1 – PCs will mount the DVD, but read media as corrupted!”
Use Toast and burn hybrid discs that are readable on both Mac and PC…

June 4, 2005 at 2:39 am in reply to: Thinking of Avid Xpress Pro and ditching Final Cut Pro.[Scott Witthaus] “Dont think Xpro is the main competitor to FCP. I recently had an Avid rep tell me that Avid now considers Media Composer Adrenaline as the main competition to FCP5. He put a demo in my shop and the list on it was $57,000. I said thanks but no thanks.”
No question. I’ve been saying that for over a year. The Adrenaline owner nearest us has learned that the hard way, as we’ve been doing uncompressed SDI 10 bit for over two years. Many of our customers were his, but with his investment his rates are much higher…

June 4, 2005 at 2:30 am in reply to: Having read about the JVC GY-HD100U in the HDV Forum will FCP support ProHD?Yes Firestore is making one for the new Panny, but I’m guessing that you may not have experience with these external HD recorders? Everyone I know that has one has had an issue at some point, and many have lost footage at one point.
P2 has a lot of advantages and some disadvantages (cost, capacity, etc.), but that type of media has created zero problems in digital cameras and other uses. True is, for real HD it might just worth it…

[Bob Zelin] “I have never met anyone that said “damn, I wish I never bought that AJA IO box”. “
True enough Bob.
Now if the Kona 2 only had the component YUV and S-video inputs… then the we could use it instead of the Io…

[David Slater] “yes the 9800 128 MB card will work in the G5
many of the early releases of them came with that card “Actually, I don’t believe this is true. The old 9600 card from my G5 will not fit in a dual mirror door G4… the small tab next to all the gold pins is in a different spot on the the G5 than it is in the G4…

Still looking at this ourselves. As I recall, the Tascam requires FW to use with FCP, while the Mackie’s use the midi interface with FCP. We’re wondering if the FW interface of the Tascam will interfere with things like the AJA Io?

[walter biscardi] “If 10bit is your main focus of editing, SCSI or Fibre are the way to go.
“Or a SATA array… we’ve been using it exclusively with 10 bit UC SDI streams since day one. They work fabulous… many people are starting to use them with HD.
