I have an issue with the Panasonic AG-HVX200’s expensive P2 media. The AG-HVX200 would have to be able to record direct to harddisk with something like a Focus Firestore to be a viable alternative to me.

I saw a demo using the GY-DV5100 is JVC’s Professional DV camcorder with the DR-DV5000, Focus’s DTE Firestore technology, at Advanced Systems Group in Emeryville CA–San Francisco Bay Area. While this is still a DV video pipeline, direct to disk makes much more sense than P2 media. Sure P2 media has no moving parts, but the demo showed that they didn’t handle the firewire drive with kid gloves either. Harddrives hold considerably more footage and are much less expensive to replace.

I missed NAB and just found out about the JVC GY-HD100U from the JVC Rep. at ASG.

Yes Firestore is making one for the new Panny, but I’m guessing that you may not have experience with these external HD recorders? Everyone I know that has one has had an issue at some point, and many have lost footage at one point.

P2 has a lot of advantages and some disadvantages (cost, capacity, etc.), but that type of media has created zero problems in digital cameras and other uses. True is, for real HD it might just worth it…
