[Mark Beazley] “I am doubting the claim that the G-RAID “barely” gives you one UC 10bit stream. That is the drive that AJA recommended to me. As long as you run off a dedicated FW800 PCI board, you should get the 1 stream as advertised. 1 stream is less than 30MB/sec. Unless you have zillion audio tracks going as well, I think you will be fine. The G-RAID is actually 2 drives striped in a hardware array. I’ve had no problems with frames being dropped. Maybe it can happen, but I’ve yet to see FCP pop up the dropped frame warning window (and yes I have it set to).”
Having seen it, I don’t doubt it, but then maybe we’re doing more with our streams than you typically do (color correction, motion, etc.). Either way, one stream is grossly inadequate for many of us. We get at least four streams on a four drive SATA array. As for dropped frames, you can experience them without getting the warning.
[Mark Beazley] “Internal SATA drives is a bad idea no matter what format you edit in my opinion.”
It works better than you think, but yes, our SATA array is external. FWIW, there are some people who prefer external SATA arrays (8 drives) to the Xserve RAID for HD. I was surprised to see people report issues with the Xserve RAID for HD. I know people who seem happy with it. Hopefully the new firmware patch will solve whatever issues they were having.

If he doesn’t mind sacrificing most of the realtime. I wouldn’t be happy with that.
FWIW, I have associates using the G-Raid’s. Dropped frames still exist with 10 bit UC using that.

You’ll need at least a four drive array to play back UC 10 bit. A single drive won’t do it…

The concensus seems to be that they test out slower than the Maxtors and Seagates, though speed isn’t crucial with a system drive

[Chris Poisson] “Having had 4 LaCie drives die on me over the last couple of years, I can only say that your success with them has been good luck. “
I’ve been using LaCie for years and haven’t had a single failure. Still have three I use every day…

[AJA Sales Department] “AJA does not provide technical support on public forums, if you were expecting a reply from us. We DO encourage you to use your free technical support that is included with any AJA product…we have four full-time tech-support engineers that would be happy to assist you:”
AJA: This is good info to post up here every once in awhile… for those newer people who may not know this, or someone who may have forgotten.
Having said that, if you do call AJA, you get extraordinary tech support… I’d put it up against anyone…

[ange] “so what sthe verdict, is 5 worth all the hype? beside the multi cam is it all that and more or is it just ok I have 5 now?”
The multicam alone is worth upgrading for. Personally, SoundTrack Pro’s ability to fix audio issues quickly, easily justified the upgrade. There’s a lot more, and many features not mentioned at NAB, but we were already sold…

[Travis Paulding] “P.S. I am new to Mac so I may have missed something somewhere but I have tried everything I know.”
Travis… is it possible that you had Motion 1.01 installed? If so you will need to manually remove everything because reinstalling the original CD now has you hosed with a mix of 1.0 and 1.01 stuff.
If so, do a search for “Motion” and manually remove all the files, prefernces, etc. Do the search untill nothing else shows up, then reinstall from the CD and then update to 1.01. It’s not as difficult as it might sound…

Jeff,
I’d try two of those Seritek cards. They each have four external ports. Barefeats has a comparison on them I believe…

Ron, Kathlyn, Curtis, et al,
Boy, talk about a thread taking on a life of it’s own and getting way too much attention!
I hope from my posts that this is clear by now, but if not, let me apologize and put this to rest. I never meant to insinuate that there was any bias. I’ve always liked the COW because I always felt it wasn’t biased. Mac users are probably happier here than on any other forums. Yes, we’ve had repeated issues with the “Q” function in Safari, but it’s a small issue, these are not the COW’s fault, and we’re grateful when it’s fixed. Yes, I know that Safari is just one browser, and I’ve never felt that you were responsible for dropping evverything and fixing issues with it. Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m not happy when you do fix it.
It’s clear my initial post was too brief and not specific enough. I thought asking for a Widget was a stretch (though it sounds like fun). What I should have said was “given that they are trying to find the time and resources to keep up with the changes in Safari, a widget is unlikely”. Hindsight is 20/20. If there ever is a widget, that would be icing on the cake, but not something I’d expect you to put effort into given the demands on your resources.
The comment about the coding side being PC (although it appears to be Linux as well now) was that the coders don’t always notice when Macs are experiencing problems, nor do we know if they have equipment to test for it. In my experience PC users tend to use the Mac reluctantly, at least in our companies (you’d think we were sending them to their room without supper). In the future, I will send an email to Curtis (since he has both) whenever I expereince an issue and not wait for someone to discover it.
As for your mix of OS at the COW, that’s pretty common these days, and I expect Linux to continue to grow. I also forgot that Curtis works part time. Given the explosion in the number of new forums, I’m sure you have competiting priorities. The bad news is, there’s probably no relief in site for you. The good news is it means you’re thriving.
Good luck with your interface changes… a task I’m sure will provide many challenges.
(still laughing about the Linux and command line reference… we have those here as well)
