  • strange behaviour when overwriting clips in timeline.

Posted by Dustin Lau on June 13, 2005 at 5:48 am

I’m sure i must have toggled some mode that resulted in this but can’t for the life of me figure out what it is.

Basically, whenever I drag a clip in the timeline over another clip, instead of overwriting the clip it is over, what i am left with is an empty space between the 2 clips and the clip that was being dragged over is significantly shorter, (about the size of the overlapping ends of the 2 clips)

Hope someone out there has some idea why this is so, it’s hardly critical but unspeakably annoying to have to work around.

    Thanks in advance
    Dustin

Are these clips Media Managed Clips? Try just copying and pasting them into a new sequence, let me know if that works.

Maybe you’re inserting the clip? If you are a dragger and dropper, there are a few pitfalls. If you drag below the line in the video track, it’s an overwrite. If you drag above the line, it’s an insert. I do hope you know the difference.

My suggestion is to blow off dragging and dropping altogether and use F9 and F10 shortcuts instead. Waaaaay faster and more precise.

Draggin’ and droppin’s fer sissies anyway. 😉

Unless you’re working on complex sequences with tons of layers. Dragging and dropping can allow more control. Not everyone works on projects with simple cuts like documentaries and films…

I am not dragging and dropping from the viewer to the timeline, I am repositioning clips in the timeline after they’ve been inserted (with f9 and f10 thank you very much) also the icon that appears is the overwrite icon (arrow pointing down) not the insert icon (arrow pointing right).

Have you tried putting them in a new sequence yet, seems to solve this one I think. Or even just dragging to a different track does that work?

I’ve recently installed a fresh system with fcp5 and the problem has not reoccured so it appears i will never know what happened, but i do believe it was probably corrupted preferences.

Thanks to everyone that tried to help with the exception of gunner, who seems more interested in the futile engagement in the art of one-upmanship.
