Just to confirm, you are selecting Windows Media Video V9 (*.wmv) in the Save as type dropdown box first and then going into the Template dropdown box for options, aren’t you?

  • You have to apply the timecode effect to the clip while it’s still in the Media pool. Then you can do whatever you want with it and the original T/C will always be there.

Odds are that you’ve somehow set it to use “internal capture” whixh is meant for HDV. To change it back in Vegas, got to Options – Preferences – Video and select “use exteranl capture application”. If it’s not already pointed to C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas 6.0\VidCap60.EXE, browse to this location and select it.

Make sure you select the “external” capture app and not the internal one as that’s for HDV footage.

Media Player Classic will do it for you. Some minor tweaking may be required but it’s very easy. I use it for surround sound playback on our Vegas suites at work and it’s great.

    …will their be a loss in quality…

Most definitely. First of all, DV is a 4:1:1 signal while MPEG-2 is 4:2:0. Check out Adam Wilt’s site if these numbers mean nothing to you.
Secondly, MPEG-2 further compresses the original DV signal by at least a 4:1 margin, if not more. Bring thuis back into Vegas and, notonly is is harder to edit, it gets recompressed, further deteriorating the signal.
If you’re short on storage space, buy another hard drive and an external box. You can use either Firewire or USB as both work fine. This is an inexpensive option that will more than pay for itself in improved picture quality in the final product.

If you think 80 is bad, take a look at the Bezier fun thread. 300 pieces!!
Potentially more help in the compositing question thread by the same OP.
Hopefully Edward Troxel will chime in here as I think he helped out on this project.

  • Here’s a response from one guy on another forum.
BTW, his machine was only a 2GHz.

I don’t recall my disc setup, but I plugged three cameras into a Firewire hub, put in three tapes, and opened three instances of Scenalyzer. In each instance I selected a camera and started capture. They ran for fifteen minutes with no errors or dropped frames, so I ended the test. It would make sense to use different drives for the capture.

Sorry but the only way that I know of is to break it into pieces and deal with each one separately.
