  • What exact version number of AE and AME are you using?

Read the post a bit more carefully, they suggest using the Curves effect and working on the alpha channel there. Note how you can work on the overall RGB, but you can also choose to work specifically on R, B, B, or A.

If I recall correctly, this was a bug on certain operating systems. I believe it was fixed in an update. I can see that you are not using the latest version of CC 2014, so that would probably be it. 🙂

  • On a decent NVIDIA card, the ray-traced renderer should be somewhat decent.

What version of AE are you using?
What are your ray-traced settings for the GPU? Do you have “use unsupported cards” checked?

If you are on CC 2017.1 and that box is checked, you may need to swap out the Optix library on your machine.

Rename the OptiX.1.dll from the After Effects program directory to Optix_old.1.dll (that way you can put it back to normal if you need to). This is typically the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC 2017\Support Files directory.
Then install the latest version of OptiX from the NVIDIA website (https://developer.nvidia.com/optix ).
After doing these two steps, the ray tracing functionality in After Effects should be functional.
As an aside, after removal of the OptiX dll from the After Effects directory the CPU ray tracing support will not work, but that was a pointless feature anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

  • For what it’s worth, I’ve found interactivity greatly improved in CC 2017. Remember, if you click the “Advanced Options” while installing CC 2017, you can uncheck the box to remove older versions. That way, you can try CC 2017, but your CC 2014 is undisturbed in case you need it for something (you can even save back to a version CC 2014 can use from CC 2017 very easily).

  • Dave’s suggestions are great. Do those first.
This is an issue that happened with older versions of AE. What is the exact version number you’re using?

Precompose the shot and – inside the precomp – roughly roto out the people running, girls hair, doors swinging…basically, roto out everything that’s moving.
Then, in your main comp, try tracking it again.
Removing all of the moving elements should help a lot.

YouTube is a bit tricky to get on the network where I work, but precomposing can be done by pressing a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C on PC CMD+Shift+C on Mac.

What part in the tutorial does the magic happen?

If you think there are going to be additional layers, it’s best to add in some blank layers ahead of time because, no, AE will not recognize and add new layers.

Alternatively, you can re-import the file and then copy and paste the new layers into the original composition if that helps.

Having un-cropped screenshots can often be more helpful.
Have you frozen your Roto Brush? Once you finish tweaking it, you need to freeze it before you go further.

Also, what, exact, version number of AE is your CS6?
