If by “buggy” you mean, it’s not immediately apparent that there is more to the panel and that you need to drag it larger, PLEASE FILE A BUG REPORT ABOUT IT! We need more people to put voice to this one.

If the people are standing in the right way, you might only have to crossfade.
Alternatively, you could do a series of quick cuts to it in your editor instead of doing a smooth transition. Like, a glitch, cutting back and forth between the two.
If you really want a smooth transition, you’ll want to follow ye olde morphing tutorial with Chris Zwar and make each person morph into their shape (and/or each shape morph from the person shape into their shape).

The flow map controls how they move, not how they spawn. They will move along the gradient always going from the lighter area to the darker area. Think of it like a hill. With light being higher and dark being lower. They will “roll” downhill. The map MUST BE SMOOTH – no sharp changes – it must be a gradient and not a line.
Also, as to the original question, you can use any of a number of particle effects to just make it go fairly straight and then use Bezier Warp, Mesh Warp, BAO Boa, or any of a dozen distortion effects to change the path the particles travel.

You could just calibrate your screens to be more color accurate and that should be good enough.
