IoHD will allow capture to any SD codec or uncompressed.

ProRes is full raster so 1080i would be 1920×1080, 720p would be 1280×720. The V3HD aspect ratio for HD is bound to DVCProHD so that is why it is not full raster.

The MBP will be faster but do you need it to be portable, if not getting a Mac Pro gives you more power for the dollar spent.

The places where the MBP can be lacking is the amount of RAM is you do a lot of Motion work. But with a 2nd monitor it really is a killer system.

September 30, 2007 at 6:06 pm in reply to: How to play 4 frames pr. second

This is a solution to play 4fps in FCP and for it to not look sped up.

You would have to use a duplicate frame scenario, the best timeline would be 23.98P and each frame would be duplicated 6 times. On playback it would be unaltered. I would have no idea how to automate this process.

If you shot this at 720P@24P (record setup) and 60 Frames in Scene, it will transfer in already sped up. The clips frame rate is be 23.98 and will be slowmo with no speed change in FCP. When going log and transfer you need to deselect “remove pull down and duplicate frames.

Jeff’s suggestion is right but his settings are lower than need be.

300 minutes of footage with ac3 audio
    Average Bitrate 3.4
    Max Bitrate 5.5

Remember having a higher max means it will have to go lower than the average more often.

To test just compress about 20 minutes so you get a real feel for the VBR (make sure you do a 2 pass)

September 26, 2007 at 4:26 pm in reply to: What

remove advance pulldown and duplicate frames

If you shot 24pA in 1080i mode this will remove the pulldown that the camera adds at recording.

If you shot 720P@24pN you need to deselect it because the camera has not added any extra frames and you get something like 18fps if you leave it on.

I would think this would be able to sense if it needs to be applied or not but it is not.

So if you shot normal interlace 60i or 24pN this should be unselected as you found out.

Capture and seq need to match, especially since your end result is a 30P DVD. You should capture as progressive.

The comb effect and black of your video, they are not related, probably.

I never shot in 30P but I do a ton of 24P work for DVDs.

If the footage was shot in 30P, captured 30P and you want a 30P DVD the timeline shot be Progressive. Switch back and forth is never a good thing. (29.97 is the correct frame timing)

If record and capture were 30P set your timeline to progressive, if you have to render all the footage something is wrong.

    Export to compressor from FCP

Make a new CBR, yes CBR mpeg 2 present, with 29.97 and dominance set to Progressive. Make it as high as you can (up to 7Mbps) and then encode the audio as an ac3. This should help the black problem. Blacks is a hard thing to compress, and VBR does a crappy job of each.

Keep field order (or the lack of one) constant throughout the entire process. This should fix your combing problem.
