I’m soon to be buying a new edit system to replace my aging one.

At my office, I’ll be editing on a MacPro 8 core, with some storage and the new IO HD. I shoot and edit currently in the world of DV50 – the new system will help me eventually transition into a diluted version of HD.

Since the IO HD is portable, it makes sense to be able to bring it home (35 miles away), and do some editing at home. Am I better off with a current Macbook Pro, or my aged G5 2Ghz DP Tower?

    Thanks.

The MBP will be faster but do you need it to be portable, if not getting a Mac Pro gives you more power for the dollar spent.

The places where the MBP can be lacking is the amount of RAM is you do a lot of Motion work. But with a 2nd monitor it really is a killer system.

One more thing to add is the fact that the G5 2.0Ghz won’t handle ProRes well. I have a current MacBook Pro and I love it. Even using motion it is out performing our G5 dual 2.5 towers.

With a second monitor, eSATA or FW800 card, and an AJA IO HD, you’ll be rocking!
