Do your sound sources and video sources have the same timecode when recorded on set (jam sync to time of day)? If so, then no need to make a sequence – just select all clips and do AutoSync based on common source timecode.

Subclips always have a relationship to the master clips. If based on tape name and timecode, then those will be the same on your master clips and subclips regardless of what you choose to name the clip. More detail on how and what you are conforming will help answer that one more completely.

Also know that the Matrox mini is for monitoring only – no capture.

Did you delete all deck/camera channels and start over? Does the OS see the camera when connected?

December 16, 2010 at 1:53 pm in reply to: Question about modifying a sequence

Modifying a sequence usually occurs when editing SD 23.976 to HD 1080p/23.976 since the timecodes in the START column need to be converted from 30fps (NTSC) to true 24. Same conversion can happen when offlining at true 24.000fps and online needs to be 23.976.

December 12, 2010 at 11:06 pm in reply to: Media Composer Student

From the Media Composer itself, there is no difference in functionality. The difference is no third party applications like Sorenson Squeeze, Boris FX, etc.

On the other hand, the student version also comes with 4 years of upgrades for that $299 price!

Assuming you are exporting a QT reference out of MC, make sure that the audio tracks have no “avid black” at the beginning of sequence. QT reference doesn’t like that. If you do, and the space is needed, slug it with some real audio and change the volume to zero. This usually is the case.

What I do in these scenarios is not work with absolute frame to timecode and then back again. I just put the DPX filename and frame count in the DPX column within Media Composer and just keep working with the same naming scheme as the file as absolute frames. Lists, change lists, and all that good stuff cab be exported out as TAB or XML to be parsed by downstream workflows.

That being said, there is no way within Media Composer to convert absolute frames to timecode and vice versa.
