Firstly your easy setup must match the camera format. Secondly, the camera must be correctly configured. Thirdly you version of FCP must be recent enough to capture HDV.

Without any info about your version and setup particulars, I can’t be specific. Also a search of this forum will reveal many threads and great advice on capturing HDV.

Finally issues like preference needing trashing should be searched on and considered.

Only if the broadcast safe filter was fixed so it worked after render. A better option would be to have a tick box on all filters to determine which one remains last.

Once again Broadcast safe filter doesn’t seem to work post render.

I have long ago swapped to RGB limiter which certainly works for peak white clamping. So far I haven’t had a tech reject for sub blacks. As I am delivering finals to broadcasters, the RGB limiter set conservatively for peak whites and chroma is on every clip and so far has kept me legal.

I don’t think you will notice much difference in picture but text may be an issue. Text in a DV sequence that is then converted to mpeg for DVD is likely to loose quality.

Strictly speaking staying in HDV and then going straight to SD mpeg for DVD is one less transcoding of your pictures and should look better, but in real world, I doubt that the difference is obvious.

I am running FCP 6.0.4 with Tiger 10.4.11 on a G5 dual 2.5 . I do 1080 50i HDV all the time.

I have also had XDCam 25p 1080 files working on this as well.

I was cautioning against the use of uncontrolled device as it means you are editing without reference to the code on tape and therefore it is a total mess if you have to go back and recapture off tape.

As for how to do it, that is really basic stuff you will find with a forum search or better still reading the manual. Sorry if it seems like I am reluctant to help you do something that may be a huge mistake months down the track.

Capturing as uncontrolled device and ignoring timecode is what you are proposing I think. Not a good idea if you ever need to recapture in sync.

I and many others have found the broadcast safe doesn’t maintain safe levels after render. It may be a 10 bit thing but either way, I prefer to use the RGB limiter which does a better job and so far for me has maintained safe levels post render.

That said, I always prefer to adjust levels with the 3 way CC before adding the RGB limter. Just limiting can badly crunch white detail.
