I captured footage in DVCPRO HD and am delivering 150 individual clips in Prores 422 (HQ). Workflow is: capture from P2 card, set in and out points, place on timeline sequence (same settings as clips always), apply Broadcast Safe filter to all clips and do minor color correction. Then I select all and drag themfrom the timeline into a new folder from which I batch export the clips in ProRes 422 (HQ).

Sometimes I have to reimport clips to correct edit points or bad color which I missed. Again I place the ProRes clips on a timeline (same settings as clips), re-edit, and put them back in the folder and batch export. But sometimes these clips have unsafe levels. I don’t see this on the DVCPRO HD clips, just on the ProRes 422 clips, but those should already have been exported with the Broadcast Safe filter and I check them first.

Whats going on and should I worry? Does Prores change the color information?

I and many others have found the broadcast safe doesn’t maintain safe levels after render. It may be a 10 bit thing but either way, I prefer to use the RGB limiter which does a better job and so far for me has maintained safe levels post render.

That said, I always prefer to adjust levels with the 3 way CC before adding the RGB limter. Just limiting can badly crunch white detail.

Hmmm maybe its possible that adjusting the white balance when I color correct causes some of the values to clip.

You’re right, its better to first fix color before adding the Broadcast Safe filter so everything goes through it in the right order. I’ll try out the RGB limiter next time. Thanks.
