You could do it manually… typing one character at a time, then making each a 3D layer and set keyframes. Are you typing whole sentences or just a word or two? It will certainly effect how much time it would take. As far as automation or expressions are concerned… I am sure it is possible but I am not so good with the expressions.

The only version of After Effects CS3 available right now is the beta which to my understanding won’t allow 3rd party plugins. The full version out in June obviously will.

You could try and digitize actual video rewinding, like someone else here suggested, but instead of using your actual video do it with a screen of black. Then you will get a nice black and white “matte” you can composite over your footage using transfer modes. I have done this before and it works well.

February 6, 2006 at 6:25 pm in reply to: Opening a project from After Effects 7.0 in After Effects 6.5I wonder what the legalities would be for having old versions of the software installed. Once you use your serial to upgrade, it becomes part of the newest version of the software. Thats why it is cheaper to upgrade. Keeping several old copies of software may be a workaround, but you can’t honestly sit there and say that being able to reverse save to any version wouldn’t be an asset to your workflow. Photoshop, and Illustrator do it, After Effects should be no different.

You’ll also want to be careful when buying educational versions of software to save money. Sometimes you are not able to upgrade from the educational version to a full version. I don’t think this is the case with Adobe, but it is with Apple. Something to look into, not to mention your out of luck anyways if you are not a student.

October 27, 2005 at 8:36 pm in reply to: anyone know how to turn Powerpoint into Video?I don’t do much with Powerpoint but under the file menu within the program there is a make movie… option. There are a bunch of settings to choose how you want it to export. I am working on a Macintosh using the lastest version of Office so I can’t imagine why it would be much different if you are on a PC.

Check to see if you are working in a square pixel comp. Then make sure your footage (the bitmap) is set at square pixels as well. See if this works out.

October 20, 2005 at 1:06 pm in reply to: Creating widescreen composition and exportingSeeing as you built everything anamorphic using widescreen pixels (1.2) then the animation will need to be rendered in a square pixel environment for display on a computer screen i.e. powerpoint. So you have a few choices. You could drop the widescreen animation into a 640X480 or 720X540 square pixel comp and crop off the edges, or scale it to fit and “letterbox” the animation. Or you could build a comp at 864X486 (the square pixel environment for widescreen D1 footage) and render it with the animation codec or whatever. If this size is too big for powerpoint, you could always scale the size down keeping this proportion. Write back if you have any trouble.

For the others you’ll need The Foundry’s Tinderbox (T_starburst, T_lensblur and Knoll Light Factory by Red Giant Software (LF_circle spread, LF_disc, LF_elipse, unmult).

You might try the cylinder plugin. It is one of the Cycore effects that comes with AE 6.5.
