need help making rewind effect
Posted by Brandon on February 4, 2006 at 8:02 pmI’m trying to make an effect where it looks like the video is rewinding like on a VCR. I tried several different ways, but couldn’t get it right. Any suggestions?

February 4, 2006 at 10:27 pmA good way to do this is with a deck and record the actual video reversing. But you could combine a combination of video look and a rolling horizontal bar along with a distortion of the footage. It’s real easy if you can actually rewind a deck and record it.

February 5, 2006 at 1:40 amTry adding a wave warp set to only horizontal and do a whacky animate of it’s keyframes to mimic the loss of sync when rewinding.
Add some noisy layers that move up and down, perhaps add more noise, and check out Aharon Rabinowitz’s tutorial on a TV-screen look. -

February 5, 2006 at 10:49 pmIf you are capable of recording a rewinding vcr into your disk, do it and mask the distortion lines. In in many vcrs are pure noise and stay in the same place.

February 6, 2006 at 4:52 pmThere’s a time displacing filter in the Sapphire plugin pack that does exactly this.
“Time Slice” adds in the proper look of rewinding/ffwding footage. It also adds a funky wobbly look to it when you choose to deinterlace the filter.

February 6, 2006 at 6:29 pmYou could try and digitize actual video rewinding, like someone else here suggested, but instead of using your actual video do it with a screen of black. Then you will get a nice black and white “matte” you can composite over your footage using transfer modes. I have done this before and it works well.
