The reason that QT Player doesn’t show the QT as 960×720 is almost certainly that the file’s Current SIze is set to 1280×720. Basically QT movies have an Actual Size (960×720 in this case) and a Current Size which is saved as part of the file. FCP would ignore the Current Size and just use the Actual Size whereas apps llike QT Player and After Effects DO use it, hence why DVCPROHD will confusingly look like “true square pixel media”. Current Size is simply a “live resize” upon playback and if you open up a movie’s properties in QTP and select the Video Track you can get the Actual and Current Size values.

The only reason they don’t use the anamorphic term is that people associate it with SD and it would spoil the marketing :-)Whichever way you look at it, these major HD formats are all anamorphic with a custom pixel aspect ratio.

You can’t find anything in the manuals for the simple reason that the feature doesn’t exist! Compressor 2 supports cluster rendering but FCP5 does not.

The audio type cannot be changed if the media is online for a clip.

Select the clips and “Make Offline” with the “Keep on Disk” option selected. Now you can change the audio type to “Stereo” then choose Reconnect Media to get the media back.

If you want to trim frame by frame and hear the audio then don’t use the < and > keys but use JKL instead – hold down the K key and hit J to go back 1 frame or L to go forward 1 frame with audio.

You have to change the “Field Dominance” in the sequence setting to “None” if you want to render in frames rather than fields. It’s not possible to do it on an effect-by-effect basis as you can on DS.

Out of interest, what NLE were you coming from? I’ve always found that audio is something that the majority of editors aren’t that interested in, so it doesn’t produce much buzz or feature requests. With Soundtrack Pro out now, I think that’ll start to change.

Yes, the capability that’s there is useful enough, certainly preferable to not having any subframe ability at all. I mix and finish audio for all my projects in FCP and find it OK but it would be much better if we had a mixer with track fx, sends, buses etc.

You can’t do actual cutting at sub-frame level but you can set audio keyframes and slip the clip to 1/100 frame accuracy.

I’m DV50 all the way so there’s no big incentive for me to use PhotoJPEG but I can see that it would be a good idea, especially as an offline codec.

Doesn’t really matter – If you delete the folder itself then FCP will recreate it next time you start up.
