  • Audio Scrubbing when Trimming?

Posted by Ren Hinks on April 12, 2005 at 11:28 pm

I’m an AVID editor learning FCP. I have audio scrubbing turned on but it doesn’t seem to work when Trimming, either in the Timeline in any case or in the Trim Editor except one uses the Scrub bar in some manner, not the +1, +5, etc trim controls.

Is there any way to have audio scrub in the timeline when trimming?

If there is no way to get scrubbing when using the trim controls when in the Trim editor, is there any way to “gear down” when mouse trimming in the scrub bar in the Trim Editor?
    OR
Is there any way to zoom the scrub bar timelines in the Trim Editor to allow for more precise mouse trims?

While writing this, I have just learned about using the more precise transport controls when in the Trim Editor that act on the playhead of the outgoing or incoming clips based on the mouse pointer location over the clip images – then I get “scrubbing” although not exactly in the same manner as on an AVID – I then set the In or Out after I find what I’m looking for using transport – is this FCP proceedure?

    thanks,
    ren

Go to User Preferences > Editing tab and enable “Dynamic Trimming” (Shift-Command-D also toggles it on/off). Dynamic Trimming will give you a more Avid-like approach so you can use JKL to trim the edit point (with audio) without having to set a new in or out point. Takes a bit of getting used to – if you’re trimming in normal or faster than normal speed then the trim takes effect when you hit “K” to stop. If you’ve got K already held down to go slow or frame by frame then when you release K the trim takes effect.

In the same place there are also checkboxes for whether you want to listen to the sequence audio or the only the audio on the track you’re trimming.

What about when you are in trim mode and you use the ‘<' or '>‘ keys to trim frame by frame; I can’t get audio when editing in this mode.
From memory, in the Avid, you turn Caps Lock ON – Is there a FCP equivalent?

I assume it can’t be done, and this is the workaround:

    Thanks Jerry.

If you want to trim frame by frame and hear the audio then don’t use the < and > keys but use JKL instead – hold down the K key and hit J to go back 1 frame or L to go forward 1 frame with audio.
