Depends what you want to do. If you’re using the ripple tool to do a one-sided trim then you’ll find FCP actually keeps clips further down the timeline in sync without you having to manually select trim points on other tracks.

AFAIK Xpress Pro will not work with the Mackie controller. In usual Avid style, they only support Digidesign control surfaces (which in true Digidesign style usually won’t work with anything else!).

However the Digidesign Command 8 surface does seem to have a “standalone MIDI controller mode”, so that might be worth an investigation. OTOH FCP uses “Mackie Control Protocol” and the surface doesn’t support that then you’re out of luck.

There is no reason whatsoever why you can’t record anamorphic onto Beta SP. Sure it’s not as good as digi but neither format were originally designed for 16:9 – anamorphic video is essentially a hack.

This problem is almost certainly an error on behalf of the broadcaster. It sounds like at some point in the chain the source was thought to be 4:3 rather than 16:9 anamorphic and as a result the image has been zoomed in. Time to start asking some questions…!

There is an app called Toki Shot which will do shot detection on a QT movie and save it as an EDL:

Exporting as a reference movie does this:
* Renders any unrendered or RT effects in the sequence
* Creates a new QT file with LINKS to either the source clips or render files as appropriate (this takes very little time)

Exporting as a self contained movie does this:
* Renders any unrendered or RT effects in the sequence
* Copies the relevant source clip or render file MEDIA into the exported QT

So there is no additional compression going on with either path but if any parts of your sequence are showing as RT effects then they will have to be rendered first. Assuming the sequence is fully rendered then exporting as reference movie will always be far faster than self-contained because FCP doesn’t have to copy large media files from one QT to another.

As Graeme says, avoid the “Using QuickTime Conversion” option as this goes through YUV-RGB-YUV which is not desirable.

If you’re transferring from film then you definitely need Virtual VTR. FCP can’t do what you want. Regarding the 3 minute thing, there are a number of reasons why it might not work – the speed of the drive you’re capturing to, whether you’ve got the “Limit capture now to X mins” preference set in the System Settings to name two of them.

You can keyframe audio levels and pan to 1/100th second and you can slip an audio clip to the same accuracy but you can only create cuts at the frame level.

It’s a bug – if you open a project and the media can’t be found then the Offline thumbnail gets created on the timeline clip. If you then open the project again when the media can be found then the thumbnail is not updated and remains as “offline”.

As Andy says, trash your thumbnail cache files and all will be well.

Thanks for the link Jeremy, it’s even more of a mess that I first thought! It shows that AJA are really on top of things though.

The addition in the 1.14 driver was an unity input gain checkbox, you can still adjust the output gain as described in the PDF (which is just plain scary IMHO).
