Depends whether you’re also downconverting or not:

16:9 HDV converted to 4:3 SD centre cutout:
1440px * 75% width = 1080 horizontal pixels which then get scaled DOWN into 720 horizontal pixels

16:9 SD anamorphic converted to 4:3 SD centre cutout:
720px * 75% width = 540 horizontal pixels which then get scaled UP into 720 horizontal pixels
i.e. you are losing resolution

That’s what I had to do too and it is a bit fiddly to get the curves to match up. Certainly would be nice to be able to lock X and Y together but I don’t think that is possible.

Wow I’d not seen this before but what a fantastic piece of design. A tough thing to top for NAB 2006!

The shrink back and grow forwards can be done with simply keyframing of the scale parameter. Just set the keyframe interpolation to “Bezier” so it decelerates as it scales down and then accelerates on the scale up.

I’ve always had my editing system connected to the net and have never had any problems at all. I can’t imagine having to go to another computer just to search for something in Google etc.

The trick is to set your canvas zoom to 100% or greater so you see both fields.

– Open up the .psd sequence that FCP creates when you import the file
– Hit Cmd-0 to bring up the sequence settings.
– Change the Pixel Aspect Ratio to “Square” and the problem should be solved when you drop that psd sequence into your DVCPROHD sequence.

Have you tried dropping the display resolution? Found in the popup menu (Full/Half/Third/Quarter) to the right of the Canvas zoom amount.

For the Behind Camera behaviour as an example, to get the zoom centred, the Format>Baseline value is affected by both the original font size and the Format>Scale value.

Yeah the default does look kinda ugly but there is a way to change it. In the Behaviors tab > Behind Camera, scroll down to the end and choose Parameter: Add > Format > Baseline. This will add a new Baseline slider below the Scale slider. If you set the Baseline to a negative value (depending on the font size) then the zoom will not be centred around the original baseline.

I think what Bob is looking for is being able to “step in” to the Motion clip and be able to change the source media directly in FCP. I agree this would be a very cool feature and would really take the FCP/Motion combination to a new level.
