I can completely believe him. We used to have a JL Cooper MCS3800 controller and it had a very “electronics hobbyist” feel to it which is really the last thing you want for a control surface! OTOH the Tangent Devices products look superb, just by the pics on their website. I presume there’s a hefty price difference between the two though…

OK thinking about it, the manual is a bit wrong here because it doesn’t say clips starting on the same frame only “starting later”.

Yes the A audio will move IF it starts on or after the frame that the B audio starts, this is the case in your example and is consistent with what the manual says.
What’s happening here is that if a track does not have a trim point manually placed then FCP puts in an invisible trim point on that track to keep everything in sync. In your case this invisible trim point is being placed on the tail of the gap/clip before the A audio clip.
like this (selected trim points in orange, invisible trim point in blue)
v1: GGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBB
a1: GGGGBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
a2: GGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhence why the A audio clip is being moved out of sync when you trim.
The solution is to place an additional trim point at the head of the clip/gap after the A audio clip. Like this:
v1: GGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBGGG
a1: GGGGBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBGGG
a2: GGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGMartin

April 24, 2006 at 9:03 pm in reply to: i invite discusion: does apple know about these “issues”You may be right, but Premiere works exactly the same as Avid and FCP with inclusive outpoints, so that’s most of the NLE market covered…
I’ve trawled my way through this thread and it seems to be more of an issue with how the next/previous edit button works than the inclusive/exclusive outpoints argument. Of course you have to step back one frame to mark an outpoint if you’re jumping between edits but is it really such a big deal? Most Avid editors will have used the option to snap to outpoints rather than inpoints when moving the playhead around the timeline, but then again on Avid you have to mark in/outs a lot more anyway because it doesn’t have the direct timeline interaction that FCP has.
I edited for 13 years, initially on tape then I moved to Lightworks, then Avid Media Composer, then Avid DS (which at the time used exclusive outpoints but they may have changed it by now) and finally FCP. So all in all I’ve had a right old mixture of approaches but you just adapt.
I remember training producers on Lightworks who were cutting promos and it was always a “huh?” moment when I had to explain that to get the entire shot they had to mark the out on the next frame. It really confused the hell out of them. It’s a bit like using a text editor which forces you to select one more character on the end when you want to cut and paste a bit of text. Not very intuitive IMHO.

So you’re saying that you see the checkerboard background in Motion but it is not transparent in FCP when layered over another clip?

Yes the Behringer will work with FCP, Motion and Soundtrack Pro.

As I understand it, the Behringer faders are not touch sensitive (as they are on the Mackie Universal Controller) which means that you can’t start/stop overwriting the automation by putting your finger on/off the fader. This is certainly an issue with FCP audio mixing but I don’t really know whether Motion works the same way.

April 22, 2006 at 9:08 pm in reply to: i invite discusion: does apple know about these “issues”I’m not sure you’d find too many people who would agree with you Sean. There is always a balance to be struck between customisability and complexity and I reckon FCP has it about right at the moment.
Having said that…just one more option won’t hurt and I would totally agree that the Change Speed window could benefit from a “Lock to current sequence duration” button. In the 3 years I’ve been editing on FCP, I can’t think of a single time where I’ve wanted to lock the source in/out and have the sequence out ripple when I change a clip’s speed.

What source clips, sequence settings and video output setting are you using?

Short answer: no you can’t disable it. Why would you want to anyway?
