  • Trackball for color correction

Posted by Sean Davison on May 2, 2006 at 9:06 am

I just got a kensington pro track ball and am trying to configure the 1st 3 buttons to work in conjunction with the 3 color balance wheels – I cant get anything to happen. Ive assigned the three keyboard commands to alt command F1 to 3 but they dont seem to have any effect – has anyone suceeded in getting these to work?

Are there any color correction control surfaces for FCP (I know about color finesse but its a bit slow and clunky at the mo…….)

    Sean,

There are two choices for control surfaces for color correction:

This one from JL Cooper: https://www.jlcooper.com/pages/mcsspectrum.html

And this one from Tangent Devices: https://www.tangentdevices.co.uk/

Both ain’t cheap, but if you’re serious about color correcting, you’ll want to add one of these.

ah but do they work with fcp or just with color finesse or final touch?
I have colour finesse but its too slow to use on a whole programme – I need to control the 3way cc in fcp
If these surfaces do work – Id have one in a flash!

Synthetic Aperture is now selling their own control surface for use with Color Finesse. You can get the control surface alone, or bundled with their standalone version of CF.

[Mark Raudonis] “There are two choices for control surfaces for color correction:

I spoke with a CC artist at NAB and he said there’s no comparison between the Tangent and the JL Cooper. The JL Cooper feels cheap and does not work as well as the Tangent. We’re ordering the Tangent for use with our shop, though we’re running Final Touch HD now.

Final touch and Synthetic aperture are both great pieces of software but I have one day to grade a 50 minute doc with 500+ edits – They are just too slow and the rendering takes forever – neither will give real time previews and there are xml export issues into the standalone versions. I am planning to use color finesse for the complex grades but the bulk of the work will have to be in FCP –

Thats why Im trying to configure a kensington track ball to work with the color wheels – problem is the keyboard short cuts which I have assigned to two buttons on the trackball dont do anything.

Wouldnt it be nice if someone did a CC control surface for FCP?

I can completely believe him. We used to have a JL Cooper MCS3800 controller and it had a very “electronics hobbyist” feel to it which is really the last thing you want for a control surface! OTOH the Tangent Devices products look superb, just by the pics on their website. I presume there’s a hefty price difference between the two though…

    Walter,

Yeah, I heard pretty much the same story. I was just being “fair and balanced” and not taking a stand on either one. But since you’ve already let the cat out of the bag, I would agree with you. We’re looking at the Tangents.

One of the things I love about the Cow is that we all share what works for us and if doesn’t work, we share that too. So if you like a particular product and have a reason why, share it. As long as we keep things respectful on here and minimize the “bashing” I think it’s good to let folks know what you’re using in the “real world”.
