Web access on your editing MAC?
Posted by Dave Felder on March 15, 2006 at 1:30 pmIs it “safe” to connect my G5/FCP system to the net? No so much in terms of viruses, but will it affect my systems performance? I typically edit uncompressed BetacamSP at 8 bit (24 MBS).
Thanks for your opinions. …..

March 15, 2006 at 2:36 pmI’ve had editing machines connected to the internet going back to a G3 iMac. Never had one single problem. You can turn off auto updates off, and if you’re not actively searching the ‘net there’s not much that’s gonna happen.

March 15, 2006 at 2:56 pmNever worried about having it connected to the ‘net either. In some cases it’s been essential.

March 15, 2006 at 4:38 pmI frequently email QT movies exported from FCP for client approval.
I’m rendering a long effect RIGHT NOW in the background while I type this.

This is the only thing that has bitten me in the past when having a edit station connected to the internet. You rolling along in the middle of a 60 minute layoff and blammo, software update opens and shuts everything down. You can turn this off to check manually, which I learned the hard way. Otherwise, being connected to the net is crucial for driver/software updates alone. Then there’s the ftp for client reviews and such that is extremely necessary.

March 15, 2006 at 5:38 pmI’ve always had my editing system connected to the net and have never had any problems at all. I can’t imagine having to go to another computer just to search for something in Google etc.

Hi,
If you are capturing or laying off to tape and you can also turn off your Ethernet connection. I ususally do that.
Best Wishes,
