As a good tip to share with you…

Create a new project, call it Favorites Project and copy ALL of your Favorites into it. And save this project anywhere you can or want. They just open the project every time you edit and your Favorites will always be with.

Keep in mind, anytime you make a new Favorite, you’ll have to copy it to the Favorites project.

I’ve been doing this for years and have NEVER lost my Favorites since.

I’ve got another question for everyone…

What codecs are you using when you see these render issues?

I’ve been using AJA Kona3: DVCProHD 1080i29.97 and I haven’t seen this. Maybe we can find a common thread in this issue.

As for you, Mitch. You error is probably related to memory. Apple recommends certain memory requirements for the Mac Pro system for FCP. You system should have something like 2 gig, 4 gig, 8 gig, or 16 gig. Anything else can cause issues similar to yours.

Don’t ask me why. But I know that FCP is really particular about it memory requirements. Here’s what Apple says:

Let me throw in a wrench….

Everyone who is seeing this issue has 4 gig of RAM, right?

I ask, because we have a Mac Pro Quad 3.0 with 8 gig of RAM and a Mac Pro Octocore 3.0 with 8 gig of RAM. The Quad 3.0 was purchased in August and the Octocore was purchased last month – both from ProMax.

I have not seen this issue at all and we’ve done alot of work with these systems. I wonder if it has something to do with the 4 gig range of memory.

Hmmm…..

What version of the Kona 3 software do you have? Do you have the latest?

You do realize that in FCP 6.02, y0ou cen set your renders to ProRess 422 if you are using HDV or XDCAM HD.

I would suggest that you look into BluRay as a backup medium. The major issue that I have with P2 is the exact issue that you are seeing. Hard drive fail all of the time. BluRay is still unproven but it has to be much better than hard drives.

I, too, have heard that G-RAIDs have this issue. You might ought to look at some other drive system that will supplement your needs, like any of the ads on the COW. We have a little bigger budget so we invested in a Facilis TerraBlock two years ago with absolutely no issues at all. But there are plenty of RAID systems available. Just do some asking around and find the right setup for you. Personally speaking… I’d stay away from G-RAIDs.

Set your realtime audio to more than the default setting. Depending on you computer and amount of RAM you have, the realtime audio can be set up to 99 tracks.

To do this…

Go into your Sequence. Look at the buttons on the upper right corner of your sequence window. Right-Click or Command-Click and click on Show Button List. A new window will pop open. Scroll thru this window until you see the Audio list. Click on the arrow beside the word Audio to open its list. Scroll to the bottom of the Audio list an you’ll see a set of command that say Realtime Audio Tracks. There will be several buttons. Click on any one of them and drag it to the Button area of your sequence window. You’ll notice that it drags several buttons to it. This is normal for this.

Now, just select a button until you get your realtime audio and the audio rendering will disappear.

I will admit that I haven’t used this since FCP 5.1.4 and then it was a different program. But I imagine it would do just fine. There are lots of people here using it everyday.

One question, Walter…

How do you archive P2 media?

I ask because storing P2 on hard drives is very risky at best. It’d better be a mirrored RAID or two separate hard drives cloned and then hard drives don’t have a long shelf life at all. I have three beautiful LaCie D2 door stops. Storing on backup tapes is expensive and slow. Blu-Ray is the only feasible media for long term storage and that brings you back to XDCAM HD which is stored on Blu-Ray discs. I give you the fact that an XDCAM disc is about $30 and a Blu-Ray is about $12.50. But using XDCAM only handles you media once, not twice.

Don’t get me wrong… I’m not trying to start a war but just clarifying the issues from an XDCAM point of view.
