Well, first of all, you say you’re using XDCAM? If you are, XDCAM shoots in IMX50, IMX40, IMX30 and DVCAM modes only. So the only logical way to edit is to ingest all of your footage using IMX50 (if that’s what it was shot in – the PDW-1500 machine will tell you).
Your DV footage is using what machine? If you want to stay realtime, you’ll have to capture your DV footage using the IMX50 codec also – that means, you’ll have to have a capture card like the AJA or Blackmagic.
When you do all this, you can edit in realtime and playback in realtime – barring any effects or titles, those still have to be rendered. The term “realtime” is sort of a catch phrase… as you’ll see.
I’ve been using this setup for the past year and a half and in the process of upgrading to XDCAM HD with the Sony HDV cameras as secondary camera.

Not really…
That’s been my biggest complaint with FCP. You can sort of do a limit function thru the compressor BUT that’s a compression, not a limit. You’ll find out that everyone has the same response – use comrpessor/limiter filter. Well, I can tell you from experience – it doesn’t work all that well at all. I’ve had to install a hardware solution with my tape machine so that I can limit the audio before recording to tape.

Well, Sony’s software is supposed to be available now but their website doesn’t have a link up yet. The Sony software will do all of this and more.

I doubt they will. Sony has put way too much into HDV marketing and advertising. I would have to say that Sony’s intention was to create a cheaper more friendly version of HD for the comsumer market and what better way than to include your competition. You heard the saying, “keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. That’s called great business.

When you talk with the manufacturers of HDV equipment, they will tell you the same as Walter. As I have said many times before, HDV is a transport stream, not an edit stream.

Sounds pretty good so far, but I would suggest extracting to Uncompressed from a DVD. It will look much better in the long run.

They are everywhere! Just google it and you’ll find a bunch. But to help you out, what exactly are you looking for? Personally, I find the ones that come with FCP to be just fine. I rarely use those artsy types anymore.

Well, the problem seems to be that you are trying to DV into DVCPRO 50 thru firewire. You can’t do that, unless you have a DVCPRO 50 machine. In order to do this, you’ll need some sort of capture device like an AJA IO and capture you footage using the component out of your machine. I have the same computer as you and this is what I have to do to make it work.
