FCP 5: None Responsive Broadcast Safe Filter
hello cow community, I’m currently using FCP 5 and I am printing episodes to tape for broadcast. before i print i nest my timeline and from that nest I reformat my 16×9 footage to fit the best it can in 4×3, at this time i also put the “Broadcast Safe” filter on my whole nest which in the past has worked perfectly to keep my show with in legal limits. Now the problem is that my once perfect Broadcast Safe filter is no longer working! I’m seeing it bring my levels down to legal through my scopes but once I render then once legal footage has bounced back out of legal! I’ve noticed that some of the clips in the nest have the same broadcast safe filter on them as well so there are filters on top of filters, i’ve played with removing those and working with just the nest filtered and/or just the clips filtered but still the filter is not keeping my footage legal. I hope i have made some sense as this problem is quite qwirky, hopefully someone out there has exprienced something like this and can shed some light on an approach.

I had some problems with various systems with the Limit Effects function of the Color Corrector, so my fix may apply to you: Trash Your Prefs.

well its nice to know im not the only one cursed, I’ve seen the broadcast filter do great things in the past though, however that was in 4.5…

I assume you have gone into the filter settings and set it for
very conservative (luma tops at 100%, chroma at 110%)
or extremely conservation (luma and chroma both to 100%) ?The other settings are not useful for broadcasting.
Transmitters will clip any luminance at 100 and
chroma at 110 (sometimes, depending on the
proc amp settings). If you don’t do it on your end,
they will. But it looks better if you do it.Dan

yes i have done that and it hasn’t been working which is where this irregular problem comes in, it is important that i deliever my stuff already prepared for broadcast though because of contractual reasons.

Why not use this as an opportunity to learn the Three Way Color Corrector? With it you can not only do what the Broadcast Safe Filter does, you can do it better.

The 3W CC does not have a clipper to lop off the luminance and
chrominance at 100 or 110%. You can use the color corrector
to lower levels and chroma overall, yes, and you should do that
first, so you aren’t kicking the sh….t out of the top of the clipper.
But they don’t do the same thing. And if all you want to do is
lower the video level of a clip, you really should do that with the proc amp.
Lowering the “whites” in the 3WCC is not the same as lowering
the overall video level. It will change the shape of your gamma.Bottom line is, you should always color correct (including levels)
every shot in your timeline BEFORE using the broadcast safe
filter as a final protection anyway.Dan
