February 8, 2007 at 3:24 pm in reply to: Preferred SD camera setting for upconversion to HD[Simon Sommerfeld] “Camera is a SD Canon XL2 which can shoot native 16:9 in 24P, 24PA, 30P and 60i.”
Before we start, my company owned two of these cameras a couple of years ago and neither one shot 24p, 24pA, 30p or 60i. The XL2 can only shoot 29.97 and I’m not too sure that it could shoot 30 non-drop frame, I could be wrong on this one. BUT I do know that it could NOT shoot 24p, 24pA, or 30p. Canon had a special mode called Frame mode. It was a simulated 30p with no support of 24p Frame mode.
SO…. if your planning a shoot with this camera and you want a film look, the Frame mode is your only choice. But let me tell you this up front, XL2 footage that has been uprezed to HD doesn’t look good at all.
Personally, I would suggest that you get your hands on a Sony HDV camera like the A1U, FX1, FX7, Z1U or the new V1U cameras. Any of these cameras will do exactly the thing you want for the same price as the XL2 was when you purchased it. These cameras have a price range of $2500 to $5000. This is a very worthy investment for your type of video production. It is much better to shoot in HD and downconvert to SD so that later you have the option of redigitizing in HD with the proper video.
Please consider this…

How full is your capture drive? What kind of drive is it? What codec are you trying to capture?
We need more info.

I have found out that it works with other codecs as well, just don’t render anything. I’ve done this with XDCAM HD, IMX50, DVCAM, and DVCProHD codecs without a hitch.

Wirh my experience… I’d have to say that Edit To Tape is a waste in FCP UNLESS you are using BetaSP.
Anything digital… you must use Print To Video. Set your machine to Regen and if you are using an AJA product, set your starting timecode in the Control Panel. I do this every week, at least twice a week. Works just fine.

Might be a good idea to check with the Avid forum about this…. sounds like Avid must have changed a codec.

Yeah, its a higher costing editing platform but its making some real strides in editing on the PC that is incredible.

You can only output HDV using your HDV 1080i50 Firewire Basic Easy Setup, unless you have a capture card.

[Honeysyringe] “Question about cross conversion – I have already ingested HDV through the JVC Deck – and I’ve been editing in FCP on a 720p timeline — It’s time for me to get out of HDV as I prep for a more proffesional “on-line” — is cross conversion still an option for me? Is Kona the thing? Or a BlackMagic product? Please weigh in.”
To answer your question, The AJA Kona 3 is the product for you. I can’t answer for Blackmagic but I do know for a fact that Blackmagic’s tech support is terrible. AJA will go the extra mile and then some more… AJA has priority overnight product replacement with their support. That’s amazing in our industry.
As for your question about cross-conversion… This is the time to use it. I always capture and edit my projects in thier native frame sizes and then cross-convert as needed for output. You said you have a 720p timeline. No problem… You can cross-convert to 1080p in realtime without a hitch.
