  • I’m losing my mind with EDIT TO TAPE!!!

Posted by Brian Pitt on February 7, 2007 at 8:19 pm

I am trying to do what should be a simple task. I have blacked a DVCPRO tape and I’m trying to get short, 30-45 second clips starting at every one minute of time code (clip 1 plays at 1:00:00, clip 2 plays at 2:00:00 etc.)

Here is what I’m doing. I am in the Edit to Tape window. I set my in point to 1:00:00 and drop in my first clip. The only option I have is assemble edit. When I choose that, I get a window that says roughly “ready for playback…click OK.” When I click OK, the deck navigates to the correct spot and begins recording. The problem i that when it starts recording, New time code is written. The time code that is being written in not anything I have assigned. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,

Is there no insert edit option? Assemble edit overites the timecode.

Try doing a three-point edit, that should allow the insert option to be available.

At the deck, switch your TC settings to interal regenerate.

With our DVCPRO deck I have to go into the menu and set the “Time Code Regen” to off’
Then, exit menu and set the desired new time code start
Then, go back into the menu and set the Time Code Regen to on’

Let us know how u make out

    What DECK?

Yes, you must use INSERT to do what you are attempting.

ASSEMBLE is not designed for “coming OUT” of an edit cleanly (glitches, especially in the TC, are likely).

Also, INSERT is designed not to need to write Timecode during the edit.

I don’t think our deck will do insert edit – DVCPRO Panasonic Aj-D650
    We just do Assemble

Wirh my experience… I’d have to say that Edit To Tape is a waste in FCP UNLESS you are using BetaSP.

Anything digital… you must use Print To Video. Set your machine to Regen and if you are using an AJA product, set your starting timecode in the Control Panel. I do this every week, at least twice a week. Works just fine.

In that case, there is no reason to fully stripe a tape.
You’d only need to go to just past, say, the first 2 minutes.

After that, to do what you want to do, you’ll need to just let the tape “roll” (in black) AFTER each short program until the TC reaches just past the next ‘minute’ point (where you will then make the next Assemble Edit.)

As was said, ASSEMBLE records over any previous TC (or lack thereof) on a tape.

I’m not sure why I’m not getting the Insert edit option? I am using a DVCPRO AJ-D455 Deck. In the user manual, it says that the deck is upposed to be able to do assemble and insert edits. I can’t find anything in the menu that needs to be changed…

We use Edit To Tape every day, with digiBeta, BetaSP, HDCam, DVCam (basically any and all edit-capable Sony decks). Works just fine. The previous post is correct. Stripe some black at the head of the tape with the TC you need. Stripe PAST the edit in point. Then, make sure your deck is in TC Regenerate mode, back up to the blacked part of the tape, enter an in point, and assemble edit.
