What do you mean by crackling? Are you talking about audio? If so, the Kona has always seen this. But it could be that you audio board is set to +4 instead of -10.

Your project file is over 500 meg! You definitely have issues, alright.
Divide it up, dude! There’s no reason to have a project file to go over 40 meg unless you are working on the documentary from hell… Any project that goes above 40 meg will have stability issues, for sure. I’m not sure of how you are doing this project but you need to divide it up. I have a co-worker that is working on a small budget film and his project files are around 46 meg.

There is a flavor of HDV that is 720p. The Kona 3 can cross-convert this to 1080p on the fly and it makes your whole world so much easier…

In order to edit properly, you really need to output to a brodcast type monitor. That means you need an output card of some sort… Blackmagic Design makes a HDMI card for around $295 that can properly output HDV thru the card to your HD monitor, hopefully, a good LCD monitor like a Sony Bravia at least.
As for the quality of your footage… I can’t answer your question about that. Can you tell me what you are talking about when you say that your footage doesn’t look good?
As a professional suggestion, I would seriously suggest that you look into getting an AJA Kona LH or LHe (depending on you computer). This will give you the ability to ingest your HDV footage using any codec that you want and the ability to properly monitor your editing. B&H Photo Video has the card for about $1600. Its a very worthy investment.

I can’t answer this to be perfectly honest, but are you trying to setup a “live” camera shoot?

Well…. Yeah… How else would you be able to batch digitize footage? Besides using the Video and Audio Out connectors.

AGAIN… Yes, this camera does output via firewire in order for you to batch digitize…
I have to ask this… Why are you trying to record thru the camera? To what? You can record to DVCAM onto XDCAM HD discs. Its 25 m/bit stream in actual DVCAM codec, of which, you can batch digitize in FCP using firewire or composite video and audio out connectors.

Yes, the files are DV Quicktime files AFTER you use the Sony Transfer Software. You do not have to have this software installed IF you are going to use the DV Easy Setup. If you use this, just connect your firewire connection and batch capture as you would with a DV machine. The Sony transfer software is the much better option to use since you can pull files off of the drive faster than batch capture, but if you are more comfortable with the standard way of doing this…. albeit… do it the way you like.

Let first ask this…
Why are you using an HD camera to do a SD project if you have no reason for using HD?
If you want an SD signal, you need to record in DVCAM mode with the camera, either cropped or letterboxed. At that point, when you transfer the footage as DV, you’ll get your audio with your video files using the Sony transfer software.
It will do HD, DVCAM, or DV. It will import the audio tracks you select in your preferences.

Sorry…. That’s not going to work like you want it.
Anytime you work in HD or HDV, you really need to have a broadcast HD monitor. AJA Kona is the best method, in my opinion. But I’m sure that the Blackmagic Decklink will be fine also.
What are you sing to ingest your video? Camera or F70 deck?
