FCP 5.1 HD doesn’t look too HD
My name is Chuck. I’ve been editing on FCP for 5+ yrs now. Just started my own production comp. Bought Sony HDR-FX1. Work great shot come out well in SD. HD not sure what is up. I was taping fam event to play and test ouot the HD. Cmae home. Hooked up the camera to a basic firewire input. Imported the footage but not impressed at all. I used Lumiere HD for conversion before and the shots looked great! Just like what’s on TV. But it is very long to import and go through all the steps and Lumiere has a lot of problems till you get used to it. Bought FCP 5.1 hoping to stop with Lumiere HD. I edit on a 32″ HD monitor and the shots were nothing like i see on TV. All I can figure is:
1. Importing wrong or using wrong quick set up. But I used what matched the camera best.
2. Wrong type of wire
3. Just don’t knowI would be very grateful if someone could please guide me on this.

In order to edit properly, you really need to output to a brodcast type monitor. That means you need an output card of some sort… Blackmagic Design makes a HDMI card for around $295 that can properly output HDV thru the card to your HD monitor, hopefully, a good LCD monitor like a Sony Bravia at least.
As for the quality of your footage… I can’t answer your question about that. Can you tell me what you are talking about when you say that your footage doesn’t look good?
As a professional suggestion, I would seriously suggest that you look into getting an AJA Kona LH or LHe (depending on you computer). This will give you the ability to ingest your HDV footage using any codec that you want and the ability to properly monitor your editing. B&H Photo Video has the card for about $1600. Its a very worthy investment.
