  • XDCAM HD with FCP 5.1 – output via firewire for downconverted SD monitoring

Posted by Mark Stuart on February 2, 2007 at 12:13 am

I am editing an XDCAM HD project on FCP 5.1 with a dual 2.5ghz G5 Mac.

Enabling Digital Cinema Desktop Preview plays full frame rate and full screen on my 1600×1200 2nd display.

I prefer to monitor on a Sony CRT PAL studio monitor that I am used to so I now enable video playback using the Apple Firewire PAL setting.

The output I get is single frame, despite being set to all frames. Also the aspect ratio is wrong, it is more squashed closer to cinema 2.35:1

Is anyone editing HD material on FCP and managing to get an SD downconversion via firewire? without need for a Kona card?

    Many thanks

    Regards
    Mark

I cannot figure any way to use firewire but a basic Decklink card will down convert (great if you can find it used) Standard Definition works.

Sorry…. That’s not going to work like you want it.

Anytime you work in HD or HDV, you really need to have a broadcast HD monitor. AJA Kona is the best method, in my opinion. But I’m sure that the Blackmagic Decklink will be fine also.

What are you sing to ingest your video? Camera or F70 deck?
