February 16, 2011 at 6:52 pm in reply to: isn’t anyone excited about AJA I/O Express and AVID ?William,
I use the Matrox MXO2 and not too long ago go an MXO2LE with the H.264 option built in, using it primarily with FCP, but I came from AVID. I’m on this forum hoping that AVID would turn on the power of my Matrox box or at least give me a clue 🙁
Before buying the LE, I did my research and compared it to the ioExpress. I found for my needs that the MXO2LE with H.264 was the better buy…why…..
– Analog input for my legacy equipment/clients with tape
– More audio in and out (balanced)
– Up conversion from my SD clips
– 8 tracks of HDMI audio for surround sound
– Matrox HDMI calibration utility
– H.264 accelerationJust wanted to offer another point of view, I hope this helps. So I guess I’ll wait for AVID to announce the support for MXO2 LE before returning to Media Composer!

Ricky,
Save your money and buy the Matrox MXO2LE it has the similar inputs and outputs than the AJA LHi and it has the same HDMI output calibaration tools as the MXO2MINI….
I know it doesn’t work with MC5… yet! But I am hearing rumors that it might in the future.
This way you have a unit that can work with your desktop and laptop system with all the inputs and outputs you need. Before you buy you might want to take a look at the MAX flavors of the MXO2 boxes… they help with H.264 encoding… I have them and they rock. I crunch out my HD web videos in a fraction of the time I used to.. and the quality is Grrrrreat!

Ryan,
Seeing that you need to drive an HDMI monitor, you have a MBP AND as was suggested you might want to export H.264 for web, iphone or Blu-Ray eventually …I would go with the Matrox MXO2 MINI with MAX.
I have the Matrox MXO2 and love it! I added the H.264 encoding card (CompressHD) later to my MacPro and could not believe the time I saved. I think I paid for it in 1 or 2 exports…Now I also hear the MXO2 Mini not only supports FCP, but AVID MC5 and Adobe CS5… this one piece of gear has you covered.
Hope this helps.

Walter,
Would you think a Matrox MXO2(with their calibration tools) and a 500$ HDMI monitor would be a valuable tool to some of us?
You mention that “Even our professional plasma displays have floating white points so they are not “true broadcast displays.” They have to be manually calibrated almost weekly to keep them close.”
Would you not agree that even though you may have to “calibrate on a weekly” basis, if the MXO2 calibration utility does turn your HDMI monitor in to a calibrated monitor, those of us trying to achieve a look, or grade could benefit from a cost effective solution such as MXO2 + HDMI monitor, if they are on a budget and can’t afford a 10K “Color Grading Monitor”?
Wouldn’t that combo be better than no calibration at all to a monitor?
You even elude to a way of making FCP show blue only to help calibrate a monitor, meaning that Blue Only is crucial to the calibration procedure.
“You can create a Blue Only display from FCP if you really want.”
Matrox is the only one I can find that offers this in their calibration utility, so it must be better than a utility that does not offer a Blue Only Option, would you agree?I wasn`t saying buy an HDMI monitor and a mini, as it can replace a 10K monitor. I’m merely saying that you can feel confident with that combo when wanting to ensure proper colors and make adjustments to those colors? Would you agree that Matrox solution is acceptable for a big majority of editors here?
I agree that top tier Colorist such as yourself charge quite handsomely for your services, and it’s justified. I’m sure you have the experience and respect of the industry for a very difficult job, but not all of us are playing at such a high level making feature films etc…
But there are those of us that want to ensure that what we see is what we are delivering and I honestly believe my MXO2 solution provides that security..
Just trying to balance out the perspective.
Catalin, I hope this gives you a complete picture

Frank,
If you really want to monitor HD properly as cost effectively as possible you need a device that can turn an HDMI monitor to a broadcast monitor … and there is only one device that can do that the Matrox MXO2 (actually any of the MXO2 boxes https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mac/mxo2_family/)Check out the video on this page, it shows how you would calibrate your HDMI into a broadcast monitor. https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mac/mxo2_family/monitoring/
I hope this helps.

Catalin,
“Matrox MXO2 LE
(as I understand, in terms of output only it is as good as the Kona LHi; plus no one has reported any big technical issues re playback and monitoring the formats I use) “As far as I know the MXO2LE is better than the Kona LHi in that it can actually calibrate your HDMI monitor, turning it into a true broadcast display. This truely opens up your monitor options. I use the MXO2 this way on my Sharp Aquos and it is perfect for FCP. You can’t go wrong with the MXO2, it is a great box. In my mind Matrox has really moved up to the big leagues..
Hope this helps

April 20, 2010 at 2:29 am in reply to: Intensity Pro for Interlacing/Client Monitoring vs MXO2 Mini?I only have experience with the Matrox MXO2 and I have to say this unit rocks. From what you look to do (HDMI monitoring) the MXO2 MINI is the only unit that will do the job right. Just like the MXO2 the MXO2 MINI has a calibration tool that allows you to turn your inexpensive HDMI monitor to a broadcast monitor… No other unit does this.. certainly not the intensity pro.
By the way if you need to deliver H.264 clips with Compressor, don’t get the MINI without the MAX chip built in. For a little more money you will get blazing fast H.264 file creation .. the MAX chip is steroids for Compressor…
I hope this helps. An Artist At Heart.

Rob,
Seeing that you said you will be creating content for the web, you might want to check out the Mini with the H.264 option built in https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mac/max/realtime/#max_graphI bought my Matrox MXO2 without the H.264 option (wasn’t out yet) now I added the CompressHD into the Mix on my MacPro… and let me tell you that the time it saved me I was able to book more work and make more moo-la! Do yourself a favor and consider the MAX option.

Adi,
I have the MXO2 and love it!
If all you need is a HDMI monitoring solution then you found the right one with the MXO2 Mini. I’d recommend getting the one with H.264 encoding built in. It runs for $850 …. still less expensive than the AJA box.An Artist At Heart.
