after effects is all about technique and not just using a single plugin

most solutions to anyones desired look or effect are usually a combination of combined techniques to acheive that look or effect not just a plugin that you apply it and tweak a few variables.

Unless you are purposely trying to recreate a specific effect that is overused and just a plugin (Yes Trapcode Shine, I’m looking at you, you worn out old bar fly)

Making particles look like actual water or splatters is challenging to make look “real” even in an actual 3d app let alone AE. I will agree with the consensus that shooting your own is the best option. A fish tank and white paper and food coloring or india ink is all cheap and guarantee you a perfect organic look.

Anything faked will always look fake to anyone with any critical eye.

White and red are the colors that bleed the most.
My secret is to use whites that are more towards the 200 range and not 255 and desaturated your reds. You can also push your red a slight bit into towards the purple side to make it look more rich and not as orangey. those are just personal preferences.

  • in the world of video 250 gig is tiny. Uncompressed HD footage can run up to 500gb/hour for just your raw source

rent a smoke machine for $20 it will look real rather than fake

    or

    play with particle playground

    or

play around with a video camera a sheet of solid colored paper and some cigar smoke (cancer not included, brush your teeth after)

  • There are many posts and a bunch of tutorials on this exact effect in the cow archives, it’s been asked a couple of times within the last week already, so just search the forum and the archives and you’ll find lots of methods.
