After Effects filters

You must be kidding (no offence). You can certainly find many such effects, but they are not free (you know, a developer has to make a living, too). Check around, from Trapcode’s Starglow to BorisFX to Sapphire there’s several options, but keep your credit card near you. If you don’t have any money, explore AE’s own tools. You can easily create “sparkles” by combing two instances of glow – one horizontal only, one vertical only. Check around here at the COW, you can find many such techniques. I also suggest you study my lensflare tutorial along with the project files, they may contain some tricks and expressions you can use as well. For fire study Dan Ebberts’ particle systems tutorial.

Freebie Plugins Some Glow, some not.

Freebie plugins are on the wane, Buena Vista’s ee Camera Flash did what Aharon’s tut (Click his head and scroll) “Creating a Film Flash Transition”, but there still are a few freebies around, and some nice ones too. Many of Pete’s Plugins are glow or blur-like, other freebie plugins are; sine dots, ae flame, and more, it takes a little rooting around, start here:

While not a plugin, Scott Frizzle “Quaker” is essential an EarthQuake Plugin, this is a must when you want to shake things up a bit, drop the preset (.ffx into your AE presets folder), preset and pdf here:

There were many freebie plugins in older versions of AE Books, I found Canoa Sphere on an old Book CD, and DE Glower, so check into buying old AE book cd’s.

after effects is all about technique and not just using a single plugin

most solutions to anyones desired look or effect are usually a combination of combined techniques to acheive that look or effect not just a plugin that you apply it and tweak a few variables.

Unless you are purposely trying to recreate a specific effect that is overused and just a plugin (Yes Trapcode Shine, I’m looking at you, you worn out old bar fly)
