My first thought was, that if you are ending up on Davinci anyway, why not create the proxies there, and import those to your Avid?

Certainly worth a test.

And, a quick Google search shows a number of YouTubers showing how to do just that.
Although, you might still want to consider “upgrading” the Macs and the Avid software.

Hey Ellis,

Ivan makes some very good points.

I would suggest that you’ll want a minimum of 64GB Ram (as fast as you can get it).
Minimum Intel i7 processor, i9 is even better.
1TB SSD drive for boot and software + 4TB for media.
NVidia ADA (A.I.) board.
You may need to look at your monitor, and upgrade that to 4K.

Depending on budget, you may want to consider buying a pre-built system. Some like HP, offers up to 5 year next day fix or swap for a fraction (10%ish) of the price of the PC.

Hey Neil,

Looks like a fun project.

Question is whether your art, comes before the technology that you want to use?

As in there was no “After Effects, Motion and FCP” back in the bygone area of Television Broadcast.

Although not the answer to your question, maybe consider taking a modern animated TV Title, or program, and do it using the same techniques as used in the 1960s or 70s?

In effect, all you need might just be paper, scissors, and a camera on a 2-light rostrum stand or similar.

Then, depending on how you plan it, you could use After Effects to combine all the elements.

There is other alternatives, like Blackmagic Fusion, which is free to use.

And if you want to add “Bad TV” you can finish off in PPro (and AE) or Davinci + others using the Continuum filter from BorisFX:

Or search one of the many stock platforms out there, like Motion Array gave me this on a quick search:

But if you go down the stop-motion route, and don’t assert copyright on the “original” that you copied, and it looks good, I would not be surprised if a broadcaster or streamer would pay you for the work. Or certainly give you credit and “air space”.

Hey Phil,

Going out on a limb here, but your “waveform” when using tone would just be one straight line.

Which, depending on your Zoom-View on the audio track, it might perfectly sit on top of where “the other line” is?

What you want to watch on the meter, is if that is at a level where you want it to be?
And, if it is there on the exported file, then you should be OK.

Hey Brett,

It is a very long time since I worked on 35mm projectors.

Difficult to ascertain the size from your pictures.
But it is missing the lamp house, unless there is a candle light holder hidden in the back of it?
(Our dias projector was run using two carbon rods for light for projection…)

My gut feeling is that you might want to look at old Film FX production, back in the days when there would be a projection on the background, or films would be merged later.

Nevertheless, would love to hear your findings when you do find out.

Hey Rick,

I have worked with a Thunderbolt 2 -> 3 converter in the past. And it worked OK.

If you use Apple converter(s), you can always take it back if it doesn’t work.
(I believe that they are bi-directional, but you better read the small print)

I would normally suggest to switch off the computer, even remove the power lead, leave it off for at least 30 minutes, and turn it back on again.

Setting that aside, if you have the Creative Cloud panel installed, or the exe file, maybe run it as administrator?
