Hello

I don’t know if anyone has heard of this but I’m interested in “mocking”. This is where creators either re-construct old television presentation of the 1960’s onwards or imagine how fictional or defunct channels might look for example what could a “BBC Three” could have looked like on-screen if it had been around in the 1970’s. I have asked for advice on other forums to no avail and to be honest a lot of the feedback has been insulting

I am a near total novice with After Effects, Motion and FCP and while I have been posting on YouTube and Deviant Art I could really do with some help.

I’ll provide some links to show you my work so far:

Thanks to Brielyn for getting in touch and suggesting how to rephrase the request

    Regards

    Neil

Neil, I understand what you want to do but you are still being way too vague to offer much assistance. For example, if you are trying to create a 1970’s version of fictional channel, then it would be best to have an clip of a real channel of that period and then tell us what are the particular things from that clip that you are having trouble recreating.

Also, you might want to find one of the 100’s of youtube channels that offer free basic learning of the AE software. Trying to just recreate/mock Channel Ident’s without learning knowing the basics is comparable to trying to learn to swim by jumping off the dock into the ocean.

    Hello John,

Thanks for replying. It is a vague question. The best thing I can do is to practice using the slew of tutorials. If I have any issues I’ll post it here. Thanks once again for the advice.

    Regards

    Hey Neil,

    Looks like a fun project.

Question is whether your art, comes before the technology that you want to use?

As in there was no “After Effects, Motion and FCP” back in the bygone area of Television Broadcast.

Although not the answer to your question, maybe consider taking a modern animated TV Title, or program, and do it using the same techniques as used in the 1960s or 70s?

In effect, all you need might just be paper, scissors, and a camera on a 2-light rostrum stand or similar.

Then, depending on how you plan it, you could use After Effects to combine all the elements.

There is other alternatives, like Blackmagic Fusion, which is free to use.

And if you want to add “Bad TV” you can finish off in PPro (and AE) or Davinci + others using the Continuum filter from BorisFX:

    https://borisfx.com/documentation/continuum/bcc-damaged-tv/

Or search one of the many stock platforms out there, like Motion Array gave me this on a quick search:

    https://motionarray.com/final-cut-pro-templates/bad-tv-transitions-951220/

But if you go down the stop-motion route, and don’t assert copyright on the “original” that you copied, and it looks good, I would not be surprised if a broadcaster or streamer would pay you for the work. Or certainly give you credit and “air space”.

Looking forward to seeing what comes next from you.

    Hello Mads,

Thanks for replying. I have to admit it that that idea has never occurred to me. My “art” is atrocious but the thought of using graph paper and coloured shapes is a good one. I’ll try that. Thanks again for the suggestion and the links.

    Regards

    Hey Neil,

What some might find “atrocious” will be high-end art to others.

Often what sells in art galleries, are not the art itself, but more the journey the artist undertook to create their art.

Enjoy the process, and the rest will follow.

Thank you. In the past the feedback I’ve had to similar requests for help have been shall I say “unpleasant”

You know that when people are busy putting your ideas down, that you are doing something right, right?

I wonder what the “unpleasent” ones would have told you, if you had proposed to put a lamb in formaldehyde inside a glass box..?

They probably would have given me a government grant and put the box in the Tate Gallery!
