capturing hdcam
Posted by Rick Neely on July 28, 2024 at 1:51 pmHey folks,
recently acquired a Sony HDCAM deck for archival work. Is there a way to capture via Premiere Pro (I have Ultrastudio 4k), or is it not supported. A workflow or recommended alternate software workflow is appreciated. Thx!

July 28, 2024 at 2:14 pmHey Rick,
I am jealous, as I have a stack of HD-CAM tapes that I would love to have as files instead of tapes. 😀
I also have the UltraStudio 4K for capturing from PAL SDI.
However, even using the BlackMagic Capture software, it has not been a great experience + it makes a lot of noise.Instead, I have purchased the Blackmagic UltraStudio recorder 3g and Mini-Sync Generator, which I seem to remember can do tri-level sync, if you need that?
Both are in-expensive and you can use the BlackMagic capture software, and then import into PPro.
Although, if you want to control the vtr from within PPro and with Time-Code, then that becomes a lot more “fun”.
There is a thread here on Adobe site that might be helpful:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/blackmagic-desing-with-premiere-pro/td-p/11636892The alternative could be to install Davinci Resolve and use that for capture only.
So many possibilities for you to spend time on, that you might end up in the same location, which is to use the BlackMagic capture software.
Hope that this helps?

Blackmagic Desing with Premiere Pro
We recently started using Blackmagic Design (BMD) cards for capturing old film and video material. We use the Intensity Pro 4K and Intensity Shuttle. The old material (firewire solutions) no longer works and had to be replaced. Premiere could … Continue reading

August 26, 2024 at 4:07 pmThx for your help from last month.
I’m now in a quandry as my ultrastudio 4k is acting wonky.
I would consider the <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>UltraStudio Recorder 3G as you suggested, BUT I’m on a 2013 mac pro (trashcan thunderbolt 2) and I think that’s a thunderbolt 3. Does anyone tried using it with a thunderbolt 3>>2 adaptor with some success?

I have worked with a Thunderbolt 2 -> 3 converter in the past. And it worked OK.
If you use Apple converter(s), you can always take it back if it doesn’t work.
