1. It’s not necessary to copy or backup the render files folder or the transcoded media folder. Those can both be recreated as long as you have all the original media. The only downside is if you need to recreate them, it’ll cost you processing time so they won’t be available immediately.
What I do is copy just the fcpevent file and the original media folder, bring that home, and start a new transcode on my home computer immediately. By the time I’m ready to work the transcoded media and render files will be back, and I saved myself needing a larger hard drive to bring the backup home. If hard drive space and copy time aren’t an issue for you, you may find it’s easier to copy the transcoded media and render files so you don’t have to wait.
2. The high quality render files will come back after you render, so for me this isn’t an issue. If the render job took hours, it might then be an issue and worth the trouble copying.
Bottom line is, all you NEED is the fcpevent file and the original media in a folder with the same names as the original.
3. The fcpevent file contains all the organizing, keywording, syncing, compound clips, folder, everything you’ve done in the event. As long as you have all the original media, this file is all you need to transfer work you’ve done on your event. So after the initial backup is done, no need to carry an external hard drive. The original media is on both computers, and the fcpevent file is all you need to update changes.
4. Same goes for the project folder. All you need out of it is the fcpproject folder. Any edits you make or changes go in here. The render files can be recreated. Again, if you have a long render, you might find it beneficial to transfer the render files. But it isn’t needed if you can wait for the render.
Let me know if you need any more clarification. Backing up FCPX sounds a lot more complicated then it really is. Nearly everything useful is stored in either the fcpevent or fcpproject file.

after you converted to proxy, did you change your playback settings to use proxy media?

Do other shortcuts using the control key work? Like controls-s to expand audio/video? Are you using the minus and plus keys on the number pad? Because they don’t work on a standard apple keyboard, I have to use the ones next to the delete key.
I like this software because I can edit and organize much more quickly then I could in FCP7 or Premiere. But it took me a few months to get used to all the keyboard shortcuts and to develop organizational methods. I also mostly enjoy the way Motion works as a companion.

That sounds like an issue I’ve been having that’s got to be a bug. It’s really horrible, totally kills an organizing session. We were trying to figure it out in this thread, but I never figured out a workaround:

This is odd behavior. I wouldn’t rule out a failing or full hard drive. If I were you I’d verify you have at least 10% of empty space on your disk, and try a repair disk in disk utility.

Good list, but for number one why don’t you just send to compressor instead of exporting? That frees up FCPX pretty quickly.

I started using it when it came out and by September 2011 it was my mostly preferred NLE. I’m not going to uninstall FCP7, I’ll always use Illustrator and Photoshop and sometimes AE, but I have no use for Premiere.

This might be a job for folder actions. Right click your folder and select Folder Actions Setup, there might be something useful in there.
