Are you combining your layers into a compound clip, then adding the transition?

That’s the magnetic timeline, one of the biggest features of FCPX, and the biggest pain in the ass for any editor coming from any other software. Until you get used to it. Then it’s amazing.
Change your cursor to the position cursor by pressing the p key to get back your drag and drop. The A key goes back to the magnetic timeline.
The black clips are gap clips. Basically slugs.
I’m not quite sure which clips are giving you the problem, but I’m guessing it’s video R7T7A Cont and audio ROMAN7T07. You can definitely adjust it with the p key, but then you lose out on some of the benefits of FCPX’s timeline.
I think the best approach would be to take the video clip and audio clip that aren’t quite in sync, select them both, right click, and make a new compound clip. This will reduce them into one clip in the timeline.
Then doubleclick your compound clip, use the p tool to adjust the sync, go back to your timeline, and now you have a nice and neat synced up clip.
Once you do that, hit ctrl-s to expand the audio/video for doing l-cuts or adjusting the audio.
It’s frustrating at first. It took me a couple months to really get my head around it, but once you do you’ll have a hard time going back to anything else.

Try double clicking the synced clip to get into the compound clip view. adjust your sync in there, and then it should be fine.

I’m the sysadmin for our xsan, and it’s a pain in the ass. It requires expensive hardware, a dedicated ehternet network in addition to your other network, and a fibre channel network. You’ll have to pay a consultant at $150-$200 an hour at some point to fix something. It’s great if you need lots of storage, redundancy, and blazing speed, but if you just need 2 of those things I second looking into a NAS or other solution.

I don’t have an elegant solution, but I’ve found this method very reliable.
Close FCPX and go to the finder. Copy your event folder to your second drive. I skip copying transcoded media and high quality render files to save space.
That’s a great backup. FCPX won’t let you open both at once, so make sure to store the backup anywhere but in your FCP events folder.
If you don’t add any media and just do organizing, you can just copy the new CurrentVersion.fcpevent to your backup folder. I prefer to keep all CurrentVersion.fcpevent, so I just name the old one something like 071212CurrentVersion.fcpevent, store it in the backups folder, and move the newest CurrentVersion.fcpevent. That file should be small enough to email yourself or store in the cloud somewhere. Please keep in mind that if you have 2 .fcpevent files in the root of your event folder, then FCPX will open up whichever one it wants regardless of name. So make sure to only have one .fcpevent in the root, and the rest in backups.
When you open your backup, if you’ve added media only the clips you added will be offline. Then it should be easy enough to drop in the appropriate ones to fill it out.
So after a edit session where you’ve added media, close FCPX. Move your original copy out of the events folder. Move your backup in the events folder. Open up FCPX, drag the missing clips in, wait for the copy, and your backup is now up to date.

I’m not sure of the best way, but I edit a lot of HDV footage in FCPX so here’s my method.
I prefer to use quicktime 7 pro to capture. It’s very simple and reliable.
Once I capture, I bring into FCPX with the create proxy option on at import.
Once I’ve got the proxies generated from FCPX, I edit away, then set my playback settings back to optimized/original and export.

I would also try to kill the process. If you launch activity monitor fro your utilities folder, there should be a CompressorTranscoder process. I’d kill anything with compressor, reboot, then try again.

Now I see, I didn’t catch that before.
Then you’re only hope is to recover the event project file.
Do you have any event files in the backups or Old versions folders?

No problem!
Let me see if I can get this right. Find a missing clip in your timeline.
Make a new event.
Find the clip in finder, import it to your new event.
Now FCPX knows about it.
Select the missing clip again and go to the inspector.
Click the little gear in the lower right.
Select “Show file status”
Select Modify Event References. At that point something should come up and you’ll see the new event you just created. You ave to either select it or drag it up to the top of the list.
You’ll probably have to play around with it to get it, but that’s the basic idea.
