FCPX: new features I want
Posted by Ted Irving on August 2, 2012 at 3:08 amI’ve already sent apple my ideas for FCPX features I want to see, however, I’d like to hear from the experts on CC. And I’m wondering if other non-linear editing systems have these.
1) The ability to export one timeline but go to another to edit while in export mode
2) The ability to render multiple timelines at once, while editing or exporting
3) The ability to export multiple timelines or projects while editing
4) native support for multiple monitors; more than 2. 4 to 8?? maybe even allow for expansion out
to a mobile device as a 3rd or 4th option
5) The ability to render multiple timelines while editing on another
6) FCPX, Motion & Compressor all merged as one program.
7) or take #6 and have Motion & Compressor as FCPX plugins (obvious that Adobe & Avid can’t do
this. it removes revenue streams, but Apple has already severely slashed prices on their pro
app)
8) the ability to export dialogue from any video clip as a .txt, .doc or .pdf file.Ted Irving

August 2, 2012 at 6:42 pmGood list, but for number one why don’t you just send to compressor instead of exporting? That frees up FCPX pretty quickly.

August 2, 2012 at 10:50 pmTaken together it appears that what you need is more a production management tool and less a program creation one?
I understand the thinking, but I don’t really want or need to do that myself.
I personally like a a program that carefully balances the creative aspects of production with the content management functions so I can focus initially on the creative process – one program at a time – then essentially publish the result with the option to come back and tweek the original as needed. Thats where I think X excels.
If I’m spending all my day flitting like butterfly between a dozen projects, I suspect I’d start to worry that I’m not doing any of them real justice.
But that’s just me.
Perhaps other editors can work on six programs during a day and make them all excellent simultaneously. If so, my hat’s off to them.

August 3, 2012 at 12:56 amJust wondering if you understand that the Titler in X is just a subset of Motion. And the Share functions buillt into the primary program are, similarly, a subset of Compressor? So unless youre needs are pretty specific, you Compressor is truly an expansion option, not something you’re totally missing even if you don’t pay the extra $49.
I think I’ve used Compressor maybe three times in the past 50 project deliveries. Typically it’s just not needed much for anything from client to web, or even in many modern TV station deliveries. What comes directly out of X’s Share menu is often all you need.
If you face complex deliveries, a full fledged batch encoding tool like Episode is a better solution since that gets you access to the technologies that Apple doesn’t license and support inside their programs (SWF or FLV variants, WMV of all stripes, and niche stuff like Ryarc compatible feeds for digital signage.)
Compressor is a great tool, but like most Apple solutions, it’s built on what they own and control and de-emphasizes tech that they have to license. That’s very smart, IMO, since it means that only those users who need the extra capabilies have to pay for them. FWIW.

August 4, 2012 at 1:33 amI have a couple things of my own I would like to see.
1. Batch export from FCP. Yes, I know you can send multiple files to Compressor, but two different releases of FCPX have caused issues with Compressor for me so far (fixed now, fortunately). At the very least I would like to be able to select multiple timelines and send them all to Compressor as a single batch. This would save me a ton of time, as I’m usually working on multiple projects at once.
2. Either the ability to embed markers as chapters marks (like FCP7 could do) or the option to export a list of markers, along with timecode, as a .txt file. Right now, the best solution I’ve found for putting in chapters in a DVD is to mark the timecode locations on the timeline, manually copy all of the names and timecodes to a piece of paper or text editing program, and then re-enter these names and timecodes into my DVD authoring software. It would at least save me a big step if I could export a list of markers.
3. The ability to toggle off the feature that automatically adds a crossfade to audio when using cmd+T. At least 90% of the time I don’t want the program to do this, as I’m either manually adjusting the audio crossover or I want the audio to continue seamlessly as though no transition were made.
4. The ability to copy and paste specific filters and effects instead of everything all at once
5. The ability to export only specific segments of a timeline instead of just the whole thing. At the very least, when you open a clip in its own timeline, let me export that new timeline by itself and not the parent timeline it came from
6. The ability to save a compound clip created on the timeline in the event, so that it can be used again when needed
7. The ability to replace media and/or add to an audition using something that’s already on the timeline and not just in the event. Number 6 would create a workaround for this.
8. The ability to detach audio from a multicam clip. I understand why it doesn’t do this, but it would be nice if I could at least duplicate the audio and work with that.
9. Along the same lines, the ability to use audio from multiple angles of a multicam clip at once. Again, I understand the reasoning for not allowing this, and I know I can work around it by selecting different angles and expanding the audio out to the duration of the clip, but this is a bit cumbersome. I may need to use, for instance, ambience on one of my cameras together with dialogue or music from another, and I might need it for the duration of a 2 hour multicam project.
I’m sure I could think of more, but if all of these issues were addressed, or at least the first 7, I would be a very happy camper.

August 4, 2012 at 3:34 amI”m in agreement with all of that and one tiny addition most may not care about and that is being able to color code when logging. The color coding of the clip in the bin as well as color coding marks would be great. Currently when you hit the M key your clip needs to be expanded to see the mark or you have to catch it in the preview timeline above. I”m old school and need some serious visuals and being able to code several clips as blue or red just makes things easier for me. But your request for copy & past attributes is great. That feature should have been carried over from FCP7.

January 16, 2013 at 8:31 pm“the option to export a list of markers, along with timecode, as a .txt file.”
As a documentary editor, I would transcribe interviews in FCP 6 and 7 using markers and then export those as .txt files. Then I would do a detailed paper edit using a Excel. The text document would also allow me to find soundbites faster than listening to someone talking.
I’m a little stunned that I won’t be able to do this with FCP X.
