We started in May hardcore with it and each successive project gets better and simpler to manage. I have a wish list obviously, but I pretty much really like it a lot.

I started using it when it came out and by September 2011 it was my mostly preferred NLE. I’m not going to uninstall FCP7, I’ll always use Illustrator and Photoshop and sometimes AE, but I have no use for Premiere.

    Hi James,

You will probably get a stronger, more opinionated, response over on ‘Apple FCPX or Not: The Debate’.

But for me, yes, I prefer working in FCPX than FCP7 and I just don’t have the mental ability or time to learn yet another program, Premier Pro.

And like you it’s been quite a journey for me too. But the difference in stability and functionality between vers 10.0.1 and 10.0.5 means that a days editing is now far more productive.

Whilst there is a long list of features and fixes I would like to see implemented in FCPX, I really appreciate the thought that has gone into developing the software, the split between organisation and editing and the novelty and flexibility of editing with the magnetic timeline.

I also find the color correction tools deceptively powerful and whilst it’s now possible to round trip to Blackmagic Resolve etc I have found no need to leave the program.

But FCPX elicits a real chalk or cheese response and many people have jumped ship. However some are now returning from adobe land to take a second look.

I am missing some hair because of FCPX? No question! Every time I use it on a project, it become harder and harder to go back to 7. There are certain elements of FCPX such as the keyer and color correction that I love and for spot editing, it is killer fast.

For me it was about 4 months in – maybe 5-7 full projects after I’d done enough basic learning and tire kicking to start to wrap my head around it.

And I didn’t really notice how much I’d changed my thinking about editing until I had to cut a project back on 7. That felt so sluggish and annoying after getting accustomed to X that that my emotional response to it sealed Legacy’s fate for me.

    FWIW.

Chalk me up in the “prefers” category. I’ve used them all; AVID, Media 100, Premiere, FCP7, etc. Once you get your head around the way it works, you’ll find that FCP X is massively powerful under the hood.

I’ve just started doing a project (cutting on location) with a retina MBP and it’s amazing. I’m working with RED, 7D and GoPro footage. Looking forward to the next round of updates.

FYI: Here is a recent project I did with FCP X (shot on RED):

I’ve worked on Avid, Lightworks, Newscutter, Premiere, Vegas & FCP7. Not leaving FCPX. Love it. And it is really designed for tablet editing which is why many hate it. I can’t wait to use it on a tablet with a Vixia series camera sending the footage to the tablet wirelessly, having a reporter log in the vehicle and me editing within an hour later on the tablet. Love it!

I think I’m falling in line with Bill. I’m at that project 4 or 5 point. Still have to jump back to 7 and it’s feeling more and more antiquated. Both in speed and basic functionality. I didn’t find it hard to learn but muscle memory is something else. But the basic concepts are not that hard to wrap your head around. Just the intricacies. Which tool and mode to trim which way, etc.

X has addressed so much of the functionality that 7 was missing. But I guess many (self included) were quite upset at the way it was handled AND how it dropped so many features. Some that have come back, and some that are necessary for some not for others have not. It’s a work in progress. But nowhere to go but up.

I’ve been using FCPX from about 2 weeks after launch. Flip-flopped for one project between 7 and X (talk about double the work and late nights!) until I realised it’s here; it’s now and it can surely only get better. Took 2months for the muscle memory to finally break and get into the mode of discovery and yes, sheer delight on some aspects. At heart I’m a child, although every day I have to run a business, damn it… but I love puzzles. Would I have gone to CS? There was a moment but I gave it one more update and now it is the mainstay.

Maybe, the launch was fumbled. Maybe we didn’t expect Apple to “Think Different” that radically. Yes, there are some features that are ‘missing’. But I look at it this way: if what we have is pretty fantastic – for all the reasons mentioned here, then imagine what the magicians in Cupertino are dreaming up for the next release! (That was the child in me, apologies.) I’m still in awe at the quality and scope of materials that everyone on here produces. Mine is just a muddy backwater in comparison but I’m happy with my lot – very happy and I’m glad that I stuck with FCPX and remain excited by what I find and use.

FCPX is a new way to edit…. fast, smart and easy! As Chuck says “it become harder and harder to go back”
