Shift+Cmd+A is the default deselect in FCP 5.0 (sort of the modifier of Cmd+A for Select All).

Sorry, Tom – I can’t seem to get this to work. Some of these key commands are for multicam. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

I don’t think this is the answer to his question. I believe J is asking about a faster way to access track assignments, and not the actual tracks in the timeline. Apart from the F6, F7, and F8 keyboard shortcuts (shortcuts being used loosely), this is something I’d also like to know about. While I’m really enjoying working in FCP, the clunkiness of track assignments is the one main thing I either don’t understand or haven’t successfully learned yet.

In a single word (that the others won’t use): NO. The other solutions resize the timeline tracks as well.

Unfortunately this really doesn’t work if you’re replacing an already existing shot. I find the slomo workflow in FCP a particularly clunky implimentation when compared to most other NLE’s. However Joseph, the workaround is to do a quick calculation of the source in & outs for the motion effect you need, and then do a fit to fill, which is in real time.

Did you choose multiclip playback from the RT tab on the timeline?

Thanks again Jeff. I saw the imminent annoucement at thinksecret, and was hoping they’d upgrade the memory card to at least a 9600. For those of us who don’t care about performance and only about getting up to speed on FCP & Motion, it would be nice to have the option of a cheap machine.
