IMHO, they shouldn’t customize the keyboard until they learn FCP COMFORTABLY first. If they customize first, they’ll probably disable FCP features they probably won’t know exist, not to mention that more than a few mapped FCP functions either don’t exist in Avid, or aren’t mapable.

I think you meant to say “used to own”.

It’s really not my intention to start a flame war, but the lack of a more modern search engine has been a glaring omission since the very beginning (’89). However, just as discreet edit* had an underlying architecture that advanced some pretty revolutionary functionality at the expense of some of the more basic ones, perhaps this is true of Avid’s archaic search and undo feature sets as well.

Well, as much as I would tout FCP to any former edit*or, you’ll be the one driving. Since Apple stores are fairly ubiquitous, why not just go to one and hang out for awhile? It seems the people there are more than happy to answer questions, and there are more than enough computers to go around.

FWIW – a month or so ago I had a Saturday night epiphany about a motion graphics idea for work. On Sunday morning I went over the Pasadena, CA Apple store, popped my cd into the dual G5 2.7, and tried out some ideas. No one bothered me. After that, I tried out my ideas on a Mac Mini with FCP. (If Motion ran on a Mac Mini I would have walked out with one for my home use).

I haven’t used PPro enough to comment one way or another – other than I’m leary about the only one timeline open issue. If that’s fixed in the next release, then it may be more viable.

One caveat of sorts: I really like AND enjoy editing on FCP. It’s a very impressive bit of software, and I now prefer it to Avid, which I also now prefer to edit. However, FCP IS imperfect and there are a bunch things that need fixing. What works great is really terrific, just as what doesn’t is baffling. You’ll be thrilled and frustrated at the same time – just like with edit*.

Thanks for the detailed response Herb. However I should have been clearer in the message body as to my request. Again, I’m only interested in the differences (realtime or otherwise) between the Axio & Kona LH cards. As for FCP vs PPro, unless my company decides to change editing platforms (again), or PPro bulldozes the LA film & video industry overnight, I’m not remotely interested in moving away from FCP or Avid. In any case, I’m also less optimistic than you about PPro’s immediate future – just by nature of it’s single project/single timeline limitation. IMHO it’s one of the more daunting challenges Adobe faces, since it may very well be built into the PPro architecture (of which I’m only guessing).

As an aside, edit was great in many ways, but also a hindrance in almost as many – or perhaps I’m a little more forgiving than you about FCP’s limitations, and (now) less forgiving about edit’s.

Actually I’m not here much these days – pretty much in the FCP HD world at the moment.

That’s pretty much it. I’m not aware of any deeper functionality other than sifting across multiple bins might be a tad easier with SuperBin.

Actually, not ompletely true – you have one possible solution. If you have NOT subcliped your material,you can use the media tool to locate all master clips. You can organize the results into other bins. Again this works only with master clips and not subclips. You could use SuperBin, but that’s still not really a solution.

But yes, Avid’s limited search mechanism is a glaring limitation (especially compared to edit).
