Thanks for all the replies. Since I don’t have an iPad, does anyone know if there’s a version of Ripple Training’s Multicam course available for OSx or an iPhone? Alternative choices are also appreciated.

    TIA,

Thanks Bill. Maybe the subject should be: “FCPx newbie working with funky multicam…” I’m an experienced FCP and Avid editor, just not with FCPx

So yes, all clips have sound, and yes, I know that x will use audio to sync. Each camera had its own folder of clips, and each folder was imported into FCPx as a keyword collection. The import settings were to create proxy media, and “Create optimized media for multicam” is checked.

My concern is when I have one camera that shot three 45 min clips, and several other cameras that may have shot 10 or 20 separate clips equaling the same 3×45 min duration. Will autosync line all the clips up, so it would look something like this:

    Long synced clip __________________________________________________

    Separate synced clip ________fill__fill_____________________fill____________

I guess, the question is: Now what?

[Chris Harlan] “FCP made small inroads into Features, but it was/is huge in reality, in promo, in trailer”

I believe this is a little turned around. Yes FCP is huge in promos and trailers, and was (finally) beginning to make serious inroads in features – just look at last year’s Oscar contenders. But no, with the notable exception of Bunim-Murray and a handful of others, most reality remains Avid.

If anything, this decision will make things easier for Bunim-Murray.

[Tom Wolsky] “Their interest in software for computers is pretty limited.”

Astute comment Tom. Still, there’s a (very small) part of me that thinks perhaps Tim Cook won’t be as rigid about these decisions as Steve Jobs, and that perhaps he might make things right.

I’m of mixed feeling about the rollout: I can understand the change in architecture, and I can even understand a change in UI. Let’s face it, the editing workflow is basically one that goes back 40 years. It’s the wholesale dropping of features and dismissal of FCP’s core customer base that’s head-scratching. It’s never really a good idea to tell your users that you’re dropping features. Something Netflix has also just discovered.

IMHO, since FCP is basically a rounding error to Apple these days, what would be the best thing at this point for its users would be for Apple to simply sell the Pro-App division. Which I also know will never happen.

So yes, while there needed to be a change. it was a debacle on all levels: technical, PR, etc. Apple did NOT come out smelling like a rose.

FWIW, anything’s possible – especially with Apple – but I highly doubt that they’d neglect OMF or other critical workflows necessary in a “Pro” environment – regardless of the disappearing track trick.

I don’t know why everyone’s in a tizzy – it’s not like it’s all THAT revolutionary. Pinnacle Liquid had (has?) it years ago where a “track” could be anything – video, audio or video AND audio combined in one track. There were actually some interesting ideas in their UI (as well as some terribly clunky ones).

Anyway, just mentioning the similarities – not taking a side one way or another. Just yet.

[Chris Conlee] “Yeah, I’d call BS on this. About 95% of all big budget features are cut on Avid.”

Since it appears that at least 5 of the Academy Award Best Picture nominees were cut on FCP (with the FCP edited The Social Network winning), you might want to revise this number as well.

[Craig Harris] “Lightworks is now free and used on more big budget features than any other offline editing suite (King’s Speech – recent film).”

Uh, care to document this, or should it just be considered hyperbole?
