    Hey guys,

this is a newb Avid to FCP question, so forgive me for asking it. I’m still reading through the manuals and haven’t found this item yet.

You know how on Avid you can hold down shift and drag across all the tracks you want to select/deselect tracks to make an edit to? It saves time on clicking each track, one at a time (especially when dealing with 10-14 tracks). I’m looking for the comperable operation on FCP. Any ideas? It’s one of the few swift motions that Avid lets me do and I’m sure it’s just as simple on FCP5 and I”m just missing it.

    Thanks!

    you just use the arrow/pointer…

move to the grey area above the track and mouse down and lasso all you need….

    no modifier key needed.

There are more tools in the pallette that will select all track from the first on you select on down to the end… ahead of the track you choose…on one track….etc.

the ARROWS third down in the tool pallette ..

I don’t think this is the answer to his question. I believe J is asking about a faster way to access track assignments, and not the actual tracks in the timeline. Apart from the F6, F7, and F8 keyboard shortcuts (shortcuts being used loosely), this is something I’d also like to know about. While I’m really enjoying working in FCP, the clunkiness of track assignments is the one main thing I either don’t understand or haven’t successfully learned yet.

If you mean the auto select functions, Option-clicking will select one track and deselect all the others in video or audio. Cmd-1, 2, 3, 4 etc will select and deselect video tracks. Opt-1, 2, 3, 4 etc will select and deselect audio tracks.

[Tom Wolsky] “Cmd-1, 2, 3, 4 etc will select and deselect video tracks. Opt-1, 2, 3, 4 etc will select and deselect audio tracks.”

Sorry, Tom – I can’t seem to get this to work. Some of these key commands are for multicam. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Les

I’m still learning, so i’ll try these tips. I’m sure there’s a way to do it, I just haven’t found it in the manuals yet. It is a little weird to not be able to select more than one video track at a time to insert, even if there isn’t a source track to input (avid just inserts blank space), however, that feature on Avid has screwed edits so many times unintentionally, that if it isn’t supported in FCP maybe it’s a good thing.
