One other thing I forgot is that you should look at the pixel size of the elements in your project. If they are significantly larger than your output, you may want to scale them down and save GPU processing. Just a thought.

Your right, it would loose the 3-D orientation of the individual groups if you rendered. Did you try reducing the resolution as well from Full to Half, Third or Quarter? I don’t believe that Motion caches its playback to Ram as in Boris or AE so I don’t think more RAM would help. I may be wrong on that. Perhaps someone else knows more about Motion and RAM. It appears that you have ATI’s second fastest card (the X1900 XTX seems only slightly faster).Lee Berger

Motion’s real time playback relies on the GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) in your ATI graphics card. The better the card, the more real time playback. You can improve the playback with some sacrifice in image quality, by setting Render Quality in the View Menu to Draft. However with that may layers you might want to export the logo and then do the camera move.

Over at Ken Stone’s site https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_homepage_index.html there is a movie tutorial from Ripple that shows how to use Photoshop to isolate a object from the background. For some reason I cannot paste the link, but the movie is titled “Motion 3 – Photoshop Prep for 3D Animation (Movie) – by Mark Spencer.” Right now it’s at the top of the page. Also I just purchased Ripple’s “Motion 3 Fast Forward” where the technique for animating photo elements in Motion 3 is demonstrated quite well. I highly recommend it.

The original poster will need FCP 6 to do that. By importing the clips renamed in the Finder, the bin names and file names will match.

I haven’t tried this but you could rename the clips in the finder using a batch renaming utility such as https://publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/ I’m sure there are others.
Then you could import the renamed clips into a new bin and toss the original clips.

You can capture in any of the codecs available in FCP, however you’ll need an analog capture card or device such as those manufactured by AJA or Blackmagic. You could loop the analog outputs from your Betacam deck through a DV deck, but you would be limited to DV over FireWire. Also you won’t have any control over the Betacam deck. The aforementioned capture devices provide RS422 serial control of Analog and SDI decks.

I don’t know why you lost deck control. Try turning IO off and on. On the levels issues thing you might consider is borrowing the scope to set your input levels correctly for color bars. You could then save the settings as a preset in the control panel. After capture you can use the scope and filters inside FCP to adjust video levels. I like the 3-Way Color correction filter for this purpose. Best of luck.
