You should have the AJA “Control Panel” Application installed (look in your Utilities folder). If not you can download it from AJA support. It has several preset slots to save your settings. Unfortunately with the IO product line you cannot run the control panel and FCP at the same time so you won’t have access the scopes in FCP. I use hardware scopes. Perhaps someone knows of a third party software scope for OS X.

It works best on HD footage as there are more pixels to play with. Larry Jordan has a nice tutorial in Edit Well this month that covers this.

You can also get some bargains at Digital Juice. They sometimes offer deals on their Stacks series which come in layers that can be remixed. I also like Smart Sound for its ability to create tracks to fit any length. Smart Sound features some tracks from other libraries such as Music Bakery as well as some layered discs that can be remixed as well as retimed.

I used the FCP 6 SmoothCam filter recently on some hand held helicopter footage and the results were astounding. My client was estatic. The original footage was shot in HDV 1080i so I exported to ProRes 422 and then applied the filter to the imported file. It took about seven minutes to analyze a five second clip on my Dual 2.0 PowerPC. The same clip in HDV would have taken over 30 minutes. Along with mixed resolutions on the timeline and Motion 3, the upgrade was a bargin.

One Squeeze minus is that chapter markers are not maintained after encoding Mpeg 2 files.
