In compressor select the desired MPEG 2 (DVD) encoder. In the inspector window go to the filters tab and select Letterbox. Below that select Type = Scale, Position = Center, and Output = 16×9 1.789:1.
Then you can go to the Preview Window, select the encoder in the drop down box at the top left and see the letterbox effect in the side by side comparison.

I’ve had the same problem. I solved it by turning on shadow in the Motion tab. My project required a shadow behind the keyed subject, and I noticed the problem when I forgot to add shadow to a sequence. If you don’t want the shadow to appear try setting the x and y at zero or the opacity at zero.

I believe the only way to track usage is in the Timeline where you select Show Duplicate Frames in the Timeline Layout Popup located in the bottom left of the Timeline window.

I use an RS422 A/B switch with my AJA Io from Ocean Matrix. It works great. There should be switches with three or more positions. I have also used an RS422 patch bay with DB 9f connections on the back and RJ45 connectors on the front (non normaled). I happen to have a used one for sale if you are interested. I tried Walter’s method, resizing from 400 dpi to 72 with resampling turned off and the resulting images were exactly the same size.

Thanks for the post. I followed the link from Ken Stone’s site to the Apple developer’s site. Unless I missed something DVHSCap was not there. Searching the site yielded no results as well. Could they have pulled the application?Lee Berger

To my knowledge Final Cut Pro does not send TC back to your deck via RS422 as other NLE’s do. It’s one of the shortcomings. What I do is stripe the first ten seconds of tape with TC starting at 58:50:02 (this gives me more than enough for preroll). I set my timeline to start at 59:00:02 with 30 seconds of tone/bars and 30 seconds of black, program start is at 1:00:00:02. I mark in at the beginning of the timeline and out at the end of the program, plus 30 seconds black. I use edit to tape, assemble edit, marking in at Tape TC 59:00:02. This seems to be a reasonable work around for me.
